I had the pleasure of sitting in the Oval with the home supporters in a Shels tracksuit for Justin McBrides testimonial in 2000. Turned out we could only have 5 subs on the bench I think and we had a brought a full squad so myself and a few other chumps were packed off to the stands. The area around the ground was intimidating looking on the way in and the older lads had been trying to send us out to the shops to pick up items “they forgot” so I assumed being sent to the stands was also a wind up. The troubles weren’t that long in the past (in my mind anyway) at that stage so I’ll admit to being a bit nervous. Turns out there was no need to be. The locals were curious as to why we were there and loudly speculated on how sh*te we must be if we were worse than what was on the pitch but that was about it. I don’t know if it’s been redeveloped since I was there but I liked it, it was worn down but had a bit of charm.

Part of the appeal is that it hasn't changed, apparently. I was always hoping Cork City would get them in the Setanta, but apart from the final in Cork it never happened. I assume that there would no hassle for a visitor with an Eire accent?

There’s a good few interesting ones. Wingate and Finchley have a lot of history for such a small club. Clapton was an experience!
I have never been to Fisher or Dulwich, as cheesy as the last one is, I feel the need to have a look.
I was reading yesterday about the time Tooting and Mitcham should have beaten Forest in the 1959 FA Cup, being two nil up at home in the third round. Forest got one back from a bobbled back pass and equalised with a soft penalty. Forest won the replay and the competition.

I see what you did there Baldy, but I think Belfast would be more interesting for a football tourist, Dalymount aside. I am very keen to go to The Oval as I never got a chance to.

Aye, that cup game gets brought up a lot in T&M folklore. Have ( or had I should say) started going to away games. Some good little clubs about the place, Hanwell Town, Northfields and a bit further afield, Sittingbourne, down Medway direction was great craic.

As for the Oval, went there several times with Derry City, Setanta cup a few times and a Pre Season friendly or two. Never had any hassle, no issues  with us having pints in the social club etc and no hassle in the area around the ground.

The sad things about some of the smaller clubs around London is that they have embraced modernity a bit, and moved to “nicer stadiums”, but left their older ones which were terraced etc.

At the upper levels modernity has absolutely changed football in London whereby you either attend football in modern stadiums, that have no resemblance to what they once were. The aerial photo of the Emirates Stadium and Highbury always spoke volumes.

the oval is a great spot love a visit there, we had no bother at all found the locals grand apart from a few smartarse  young lads who seem to be everywhere. Linfield much less welcoming to away fans I thought but the cops up there had it nailed down , very good could teach our lot a lesson on crowd control.windsor as a neutral was fine though, as was the oval. Cliftonville was ok too, just had trouble avoiding all the Rofuss tramps they attract, put me right off that did lol.

I’ve been to a few others up there, Windsor was certainly an experience alright, as was the Ballymena Showgrounds, in a different way.
The Oval is one I always fancied though and, to a lesser extent, Seaview.

Yeah, did Windsor for the Setanta Cup game but never been to the Oval, would like to visit it.

yeah the oval is a quality ground. Went there with a few on here with cliftonville. Get there before it's tossed! Cliftonvilles is pretty cool. Was in Windsor over the summer with Harps for a bizarre friendly. Thought the area would be a sh*thole and their fans knuckle draggers but opposite in both fronts. . They were hospitable and didn't mind my northmen southmen comrades all flag....we played a fans game in dundela.was a cool little ground and they were hospitable after. We did feel awkward when someone came in collecting for the orange order. Time to go then!

Went to the oval way back in 2001 or so to watch Newry in the Irish cup. They weren't too welcoming then as we had the window of the supporters bus put through on the way out LOL

Probably a lot better now, and it is a proper old school ground.

Not sure what this has to do with London but as someone who has attended Irish League games for decades I do have a certain fondness for the Oval , crumbling edifice though it is. The USP is the extensive amount of terracing it retains-much appreciated by those who like that blast from the past . Used to be some memorable fights between Glens and Linfield supporters who have a visceral loathing of each other way beyond normal derby rivalry . They would fight each other on the rafters of the away stand at the Oval, and sometimes conduct mass punch-ups on the actual field there and at Windsor. Darwin would have nodded approvingly.
