O'Neill is an absolute hypocrite. He thinks its ok for him to poach older players, but doesn't want younger players poached. In his mind, poaching is basically ok, provided that its on his terms. A clown of the highest order.

Didn't take long for the oul Revisionism to swing into action, did it?

Fact is, Michael NEVER complained about the FAI recruting NI-born players per se - he accepted that they were entitled to do so under the rules.

What he did object to the FAI recruiting teenagers who had already represented NI at under-age level, meaning they were being tied to ROI before they had any real idea how their career was going to turn out. In particular, with ROI having a far bigger playing pool than NI, players who weren't up to making it at senior level down south, might still have made a career with NI.

Probably the best example of this is Michael McGovern. He might never have got a full cap for ROI, yet he ended up going to the Euro's with us, where his heroics against Germany basically got him a life-changing transfer from Hamilton Academical to Norwich City.

It is no coincidence that when he trained with FAI as a kid, he was coached by Brian Kerr, who advised him to try NI again. Then again, as a man of integrity, Kerr was honest enough to recognise and endorse the point which Michael was making.

None of which is inconsistent with Michael's own recruitment of ROI players like Bruce, Keown and Scannell. Each one of those was an adult who knew his level, and knew that he was no longer required by the FAI.

But heyho, why let reasoning and facts get in the way of blind prejudice? Wacko

How?

Michael didn't complain about FAI recruiting NI-born players in principle.

He did object to tying teenagers (Kerr too).

He only considered experienced players from ROI who knew there was nothing down for them with ROI.

Or can you demomstrate otherwise?

It’s an obvious case of O’Neill being happy to use the eligibility rules when they suit him, but not happy when they don’t suit him. Was with a group of Irish fans going to a match via Gatwick Airport a few years ago. We bumped into O’Neill and called him out on it, he turned the colour of a beetroot and didn’t like having his hypocrisy pointed out to him.

As for Brian Kerr, I’m pretty sure he approached Ger Crossley when he was a teenager. Possibly Darren Kelly also.

Why should the IFA have exclusivity on picking players up to a certain age. If they’re born in the North, they have the same right to play for their country as every other Irishman.

Indeed. Met a Stoke fan on holiday in the Canaries in November who thought because of my accent I supported Are We A Country. Soon put him right on that one. He asked if I thought he'd do good job at his club. I said yeah... If you can keep him off the sauce.
