It seems they presently only have 6 football-suitable stadia with a 40k+ capacity, with two of those in Sydney and two in Melbourne:

Three brand new stadia and five major upgrades - no way that could all be completed with "a year or two's notice" (as per 'Denis Irwin', above).

My guess is that it would take three years (minimum), more likely four, so any decision to switch would need to be very soon were Oz to be in the running. (Remember too that a finals in Australia would see the dates brought forward another six months to June/July 2022)

And my guess is that it will take a whole lot more dirt to emerge, or a revolution in Qatar or something, for there to be any hope of a switch.

And even that probably won't be enough.

A world cup in Australia would be insufferable bandwagon wise even compared to France. Every extreme gah and rugby head that seems to move over there who don't see football as a "proper game" would be hard to take not to mention the long expensive flight, expensive pints and a cxxtish accent that's even worse on women.

Would nearly take Qatar over Oz.
