Jamie Mullins looks like he's on his way to Brighton.

U19s player James Abankwah has apparently signed with Udinese and will rejoin St Pats on loan until the summer. Nothing official announced yet so took it out of the transfer thread.

Highly rated player but that's a brave move! He stays with Pat's until June but will be very intersting to see how he gets on over there. Kevin Zefi with Inter, Abankwah with Udinese, we'll all be checking underage Serie A teams for updates next season lol !

I'm surprised by the move and has come out of nowhere. You'd think with connection between Udinese and Watford that he'd probably have been signed to Watford rather than Udinese though it's good to see Irish youngsters moving further afield to play somewhere else besides the UK.

there does seem to be a lot of younger players moving out of the LI around now. I'm not LOI man, but to others in the know, does it seem like a higher proportion than normal?

To me, it's a good thing. With the sheer weight of numbers moving to 'bigger' clubs, surely some of them will get a few breaks and make a positive career for themselves and become good international players.

With them moving on, it probably creates more gaps in LOI squads for more and more youngers players. For example, the young Curtis brothers at St Pats would be highly thought of, but they would have been behind Abankwah in the queue. When he moves to Italy in the summer, it may create a gap for one of them to fill...

It's down to Brexit, these lads can't really move until there 18 now so they get senior experience with LOI clubs and sign Pro contracts which means clubs get decent money and young lads get good experience playing against senior pros.

Its going to have a really good knock on effect imo as clubs make more and more money going forward and young prospects get a taste of men's football and move abroad when they are more mature.

Pats have brought Jack Scott in on loan from Wolves so probably was a replacement for Abankwah. Sam Curtis is very highly rated but has only turned 16 since last month. He's listed as part of their first team squad so will be interesting to see what kind of game time he'll get this season if he's seen as second choice RB.

Agreed. They are training full time at home with exposure to mens football. Better prepared to make the move when it happens and if they don’t get it they can still have a career in the LOI.

It is interesting, however, that Abankwah is joining an Italian club at 18 when he would be permitted to join an English club now. Lads differ in terms of their development obviously so maybe he is much better now than he was when he was 16. But this is an interesting move on a few levels. Glory Nzingo, for example, left Pats for Reims at 16.

Yeah that could be the case but I don't think too many family's will let there kids move to a European country that's not Britain at 16 . You might see it with the kids of immigrants alright as the family's tend to move over with them.

I'm not exaggerating when I say it's the best thing to ever happen to Irish football.

Abankwah will play the guts of 30 games of men's football before he leaves where 3 years ago he would have been off at 16 a child and thrown into the slaughterhouse that is English reserves football. Pats would have got zilch unlike the 500k plus they are reportedly getting now.

In 10 years time people will really see this the knock on effect of all this is going to be massive and I haven't even included the 80% who aren't top of the class so to speak staying back in Ireland eventually breaking into LOI/1st division sides at 19/20/21 playing men's football and developing.

Not to mention as you say a few quid in it for the academy's they get money in they can invest and improve on their resources coaching all the rest of it. I also forgot to mention the money that future sell on fees will bring into clubs. Let's say the kid develops for Udinese in the next 2/3 years and a higher level club decides to make an offer of 6m for arguments sake. Pats will look at getting 10% of that also.

This mass exodus now means more gaps in squads more youngsters coming into fill gaps play regularly develop and potentially get sold for more money. People are really going to see the fruits of this in 10 years time. That Bohs can turn down bids for Dawson Devoy as they aren't satisfied just shows already that they are in a great place they can afford leverage/power now.

500k for Abankwah is great money for a LOI club.

Bohs didn't turn down a bid for Devoy, he choose not to move.

Neil O'Riordan wrote an article about this yesterday. So while this "mass exodus" looks great  and shows that our younger players are being showcased in our league and securing moves from here rather than being stuck in the English academy system, the players that are based in Ireland are too young to be immediate replacements for the first teams.

He feels that's why there is a greater proportion of players being brought in on loan from England this season. Also, he states that younger players are turning down longer-term contracts with Irish clubs as they see them as an impediment to securing a move to England when an offer comes in.

Unless clubs receive proper transfer fees for the players, there is a risk that the academies become unsustainable. 500k players need to become the norm, not the exception if the league is to become self-sufficient.

It's potentially a great move for Abankwah, best of luck to him.

Are younger players really turning down longer-term contracts though? The Curtis brothers signed professsional deals with St Pats in the last few weeks, Cork City announced yday that their hot striking prospect, Mark O'Mahony, had signed a professional deal. Johnny Kenny had signed a long term deal with Sligo a few months ago, albeit with release clause attached.
I dont think it's a good thing that we import English players on loan on a mass level though. Surely that is just taking up spaces on LOI teams that should be filled by Irish players.
We need to enforce a 'Buy Irish' policy with all LOI teams lol Tongue
