Fair play to him. Brass balls on the youngfella. One game as a sub at senior level and based purely on youth football he fancies himself the gig up front for England. Obviously not doubting his own ability if that's the case.

Fair play to him for not doing what Rice did and play for ireland with absolutely not intention of playing for us if he turns out to be a good player. He could have picked up caps with our underage teams and jumped ship at the last minute. If this is true and he does play for England it just shows that international football is now seen more like club football

But we're constantly being told by the media that people born in Ireland are just as Irish as the rest of us. I'm sorry but signing up for a country like England who have a history of slavery with Ireland and Africa is a kick in the face towards the goodwill most immigrant families have received.
Absolute zero loyalty to his actual country. All about the money. As someone else said if he declared for his parents Nigeria I'd be disappointed but I'd totally understand. If he declares for England it's a gutter move.

I am not sure you get the concept that nationality is something like sexuality is something the person feels themselves. There are many people boring outside of Ireland who feel Irish and are Irish and there are others with the similar family heritage who don’t feel Irish at all. The same for people born here too so me or you as strangers do not have any right passing judgment on how someone feels about their nationality. Just because he is born here doesn’t mean he is compelled to feel he is 100% Irish and has to play for Ireland. If he feels he has grown up in England and that’s the country he loves so be it. We have gained far more from having played born outside Ireland playing for us than we have lost to players born here and playing elsewhere. That may change over the next while and we have to be mature about it as Scotland lost players to us as did England in the 80s and 90s.

Not trying to be nobish here but who has ever chosen Ireland over England? Kilbane? He turned down an England under 21's call up. Who genuinely was on track for England but chose us?

The evidence supporting this claim is non existent or, at a stretch, very thin. It might also be worth asking the question as to why Odubeko and his family were happy to move their whole family to England when he was 13 instead of remaining in Ireland and allowing him to make trips across and move over when 16 like most or all other young lads.

If we're going to compare like with like to a certain extent, then the question is really have we ever lost a player to England, or to any other country for that matter, when that player was born here and spent the first 10-15 years of their lives here?

If he goes with England it's a complete mercenary move. It's no different to what happenes in Rugby. He's an Irish-Nigerian. It's farcical if he doesn't end up playing for one of those countries

He's done nothing of note in senior football and looked completely lost when given the chance in the FA Cup.
Lets wait until he actually does something impressive.

What age did he move to England at? If Wikipedia is correct he was 12 or 13. Therefore to say it’s no different to rugby is madness and not accurate at all.

The thing is, in a lot of countries a person is eligible for citizenship once they've lived in a country for 5 years. You then can't deny a person the right to represent/play for a country that they hold citizenship (and fall under fifa rules) This is not a new phenomenon and it benefits the larger countries far more than smaller. My guess in Odubekos case its not so much his feeling of being English but this could benefit his career much more... and he's right. Ireland won't qualify for the World Cup and we are not seen as an attractive option for dual nationality players. I agree that if he opted for Nigeria I would say fair enough as that's his heritage but this looks like a career move not an attachment to a country he's lived in for 1825 days. |

Is there really anything into it that he is considering switching to England?

Reading between the lines I don’t think he’s playing for us put it that way.
Hope I’m wrong but it is what it is. Leave him off if wants. No doubt declaring for England would be a completely morally bankrupt move on his part.
