Is this all based on Wales hammering us in one meaningless game? Wales starting line-up plus subs in their Euro 2016 semi-final: Hennessey; Chester, Williams, Davies; Gunter, Allen, Ledley, Ramsey, Taylor; Bale; Robson-Kanu In as subs: King, Collins, Vokes None of them came were "young dual-eligible players" or "pathway players". Three years ago we finished above them in the following qualifying campaign. In their most recent qualifying campaign, they scraped through thanks to Welshmen Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey who played for Real Madrid and Juventus respectively. In their last group game, the dual-eligible players were all Championship based or lower except Daniel James and one of the better players over the campaign was the near thirty-something Kieffer Moore. I don't really see how what Wales are doing is applicable to our situation TBH. |

For me it isn't about results or the players they have. That is about age profile of the players, experience and raising their profile in general. If we were using this method we would likely have 3 players who are now playing for England and 2 worth 50+ million range. These lads got every benefit available from playing for Ireland including profile and used us as leverage. Not using our leverage early when they are trying to make it is mismanagement of resources. By the time the players hit the PL we have very little to offer in the way of raising their value and increasing their earning power. If they turn us down cut them for good from all squads. We need to be playing 2 or 3 players from our under 21 squad or even 19's against the minnows etc. focusing on one result and not a long term model that vastly increases our playing pool is pissing in the wind and in many cases we are just a feeder team for the English national team.

Man City, Celtic, and Palace looking at Sinclair Armstrong from QPR according to this: https://www.goal.com/en/news/man-city-celtic-crystal-palace-qpr-ireland-wonderkid/1s6peuyr52adj13jnv95olyqu2 He’s only been there a hot minute, so it’s either agent bullsh*t or he’s tearing it up

Out of contract in the summer. Only signed a short term contract, presumably to sign with a UK club before the effects of Brexit kicked in.

Some positives for some of the young lads today - Jason Knight - on the winning side for Derby again with Louie Watson an unused sub Conor Masterson and Mark Travers get 90 mins for Swindon in a 2-2 draw. Gavin Bazunu get another 90 mins for Rochdale Anthony Scully scores winning goal for Lincoln today and is having a good season. |

Ciaran Brennan 7 Settled down well after an iffy start and gave as good as he got against a top class player in Calvert-Lewin. Has a cool head on young shoulders. The experience will aid his development. |

Not one of these properly made it, bar Grealish, shows for all the hype players have underage, how difficult it is to make it. Let's hope this generation bucks the trend.

To be fair that must have been one of our weakest ever Under 21 and Under 19 squads, almost all players born between 1993 and 1995, a period from which we produced nothing domestically. I don't think it's in any way comparable to the 98-02s that we are watching coming through at the moment.
What's interesting is that the Under 21 squad includes players born in 1992 - the 92s were actually our last good year before the current bunch. Duffy, Brady, Egan, Hendrick, Horgan and Doherty were all born in 1992 so would have been eligible for that squad. I don't know if some of those players were already with the seniors by then or if it was just a really bad squad selection, possibly a bit of both. When you read through the first page of the thread there is also a very poor Under 17 squad listed but there is also a general lack of enthusiasm from posters about the players included, other than Grealish and Byrne. I think it was clear enough from the outset that those squads had minimal potential.

This article from a few pages into the thread shoes that the issues with the quality of those squads were well known at the time. Interestingly the article notes that there was hope of more potential starting with the 1998 group and identifies that strength in numbers is vital to overcome the reality that some players will fall away after under 21 level. As it has turned out the 99s, 00s, 01s and 02s have all been stronger than the 98 group that was identified in the article. It does seem that we are now producing the strength in numbers needed to to ensure that, even after the dropoffs, we produce enough decent players to feed through to the senior squad. But the lack of players produced from the 1993 to 1997 groups does put more pressure on the younger lads to fill that void. The first five pages of this thread are an interesting read in terms of seeing how much we have improved in terms of producing decent young players. After that it drifts off into sectarian nonsense unfortunately.

the one thing I would disagree with is with in the article is they feel other sports don’t impact us.
In my opinion there is a good chunk of players never give soccer a go properly or not especially outside if the city’s. You can be sure there is decent inter county players who would have made fine soccer players if they had been more exposed at an underage level. Our playing pool is limited and any loss is felt.

Good interview, although apparently they recorded it during a hurricane. We don't need to worry about that lad's allegiances anyway.

That finish into the far corner for his first senior goal is sublime.
The amount of times he said "honest to God." No need to worry about this lad.
