+1 One of the girls in college called into me one day on the way to lectures. I had the RTE news on while I was getting ready. She goes "You're watching the news?!" I looked at her and didn't know what to say. She graduated with a 1:1 distinction and is now a teacher. Edited by irishmufc - 24 Jun 2015 at 8:23am |

There ya go. Much like the Brooks fiasco will prove to be in 30 years time, it makes for painful reading these days. Also; watch Reeling In The Years 1985.
The reason Brooks is worse; back in the mid 80's, we were still a country in the grip of the church, there was mass unemployment, the government seemed to change on a weekly basis, with no appreciable difference to anyone in the real world, and into the breach of the entire misery of the place stepped (pun intended) this statue thing , which gripped the country. Maybe, in a way, the fcuking place was so miserable, a bit of (albeit religious inspired) escapism didn't really do too many people any harm in the end. There just isn't an excuse for Brooks, an entire nation of one of Europe's best educated countries (supposedly anyway; I have always had grave doubts since) decided the single most important issue of our time (for about a month) was not world peace, NAMA, mortgage crises, the liquidity or otherwise of the banks, but some middle of the road Yank singer who wasn't allowed put on an extra 15 concerts or whatever, and everyone, including Brooks, threw their toys out of the pram. The only other comparison I can make (and I think I did, somewhere in the 90 pages) is the UK's Princess Diana when she died. You might gather, I'm not really a fan of hysteria, particularly the mass public versions of same. |

Our generation's moving statue equivalent. I still can't decide which one was more embarrassing.
Oh, hold on, I can. This, by a long way. |

Anyone see the gobsh*te running into the ticket shop with the Stetson on him? Like a child at Christmas and him a grown man. It was footage from last year on RTE's news report this evening. |

For some it was a Greek tragedy. For others it was a comedy of errors - either way, last year's omnishambles over Garth Brooks' Croke Park shows is to be turned into a stage play starring Deirdre O'Kane.
The Irish Independent reports that the play is called Are You There, Garth? It's Me, Margaret and will run in Galway, Cork and Limerick before a two-week run at Dublin's Gaiety Theatre. Edited by Sham157 - 19 Feb 2015 at 10:44am |
