Grandchildren of Irish nationals are not "automatically considered citizens". I've seen this idea bandied around a bit re Johansson as well but it simply isn't true. Grandchildren of Irish nationals are entitled to citizenship, but they are not born Irish citizens; there's a massive distinction there.

This is pretty much what the argument boils down to I think. It's not as clear cut as you are making out. My wife has actually just been through this process - two grandparents from Donegal and she wanted Irish citizenship before brexit. She has always been entitled to citizenship, but until this year she wasn'tactually an Irish citizen. So in the cases of Crowley and Johansson they have always been entitled to Irish citizenship buthave arguably not previously been Irish citizens. The question is whether that is enough to get them past therulebook.

I think thats pretty much the distinction we need to clarify
If a player is born eligible for Irish citizenship than surely he should be able to play, much like the robinson situation. Robinson wasn't born with irish citizenship but was born eligible for Irish citizenship, played for England underage squads etc Crowley and Johansson were also born eligible. I think Rooney, kane and Scholes were all eligible for ireland (not that they considered playing)

Indeed you all are right. For some reason I thought it was the same as having an Irish parent. It's been years since I learnt it so I'll blame that.
Could cause an issue then but I wonder if we have any precedence. I can't imagine every granny ruler we've brought in had the foresight to apply for citizenship as kids before playing for England youths.

Disappointed as would have loved to have seen him get minutes against Bulgaria.
It's the lads who have never seen him that annoy me. Via Jack Byrne

Can anybody say why these things take so long for us? Rice's switch was completed in no time.

I can't remember Robinson's paperwork taking that much time...
I wonder if the hold up is obtaining the irish passport or processing the paperwork through fifa. |

May have heard somewhere that if your blood connections are dead, which I think is in the case of Crowley, things, for whatever reason take longer.

If McCarthy rates him, he should have called him up, at least to train with the squad.

I doubt Birmingham would have released him if he isn't yet eligible. |

In McCarthy's defence, unless he knows Dan is 100% onboard, then why bother. I'm sure the paperwork will be a technicality but you never know.
