Not great for Cambridge financially, they'd have be better off with an attendance of 25000 at £30 a ticket.

I'd love to see the FAI replicate it for a game that they are expecting a low attendance for. Fill the ground with families and groups of teenagers for the Armenia match through €10 and €5 tickets.
the fai will probably sell out all our games (perhaps bar the friendlies) at full price given the growing optimism surrounding the side at the moment.

LOL

The tickets for the Qatar game were cheaper than usual IIRC? Seemed to be a lot of families at that game.

IIRC with a slight delay. 94/95 was almost weekly. I remember 1995/1996 they showed Leeds v Wimbledon (with the Yeboah goal) and never again.

They used to have Division One games live at 3pm Saturday pre Premier League for a good few years. Saw a good few extra games live on TV the year Leeds won it for example. The 5-4 Liverpool Leeds game the season before was on live, brilliant game.

There was far more live football on TV over here than in England back then. The delayed games by 30 mins replaced that first few years of Premier League before that got pulled. Remember watching that Yeboah goal alright. And Bruce's winner v Wednesday couple of years before.

Also, I’m not sure what it was like in the past, but Cup crowds are different to league regulars. Certainly at WH that’s the case, and it’s brings with it a lot of posers who think they know what attending games means.

FA Cup used to be the second competition for most English Football fans. Champions League expanding has taken that right over and FA Cup has slowly fallen ever since.

Also, we all remember the good bits of teh 80's/90's FA Cups. I'm guessing there was lots of crap games back then too

I remember watching that game. Never knew RTEs coverage was delayed tho. Didn't matter i suppose anyway.
Thst game was on Easter Saturday, remember it well. Was on a JBO to Killarney with football team. RTE had a 30 minute delay. A lot of us were giving it the large to our United supporting mates when Weds were winning. One of the non united fans had popped out to the bookies about 5 bells and came back to tell us that united had scored those 2 late goals, the first on 90 mins. We kept on taunting the united fans who were going bananas. At 89 mins all of the non united fans got up and left the pub. Came back after the united winner and we got it back in spades.

I only discovered the time lapse a few years ago. I wasn’t really interested in watching the clock so it didn’t make much difference! Just wanted to watch football.

Over saturation of football caused by greed and money.

The FA Cup Final is a final of the big business bastards. It will have no soul. It will be

Snickers v Nike

Man U’s jaunt to Brazil in 2000 was the beginning of the end. The six years in Cardiff didn’t help. They also messed with the times of the final and it has little sense of occasion.

But to your point about saturation, for those who didn’t have Sky in the 1990s, apart from European Cup you could go for months without seeing any football between two English teams, and the first week of January was an occasion with a bumper MOTD on the Saturday, followed by a live tie on Sunday.

Yes I forgot to mention that alright.  Even Keane said in his book that Utd couldn't give a sh*te about the FA Cup

Definitely had a delay in a lot of games.

I think the Blackburn v Newcastle game I mentioned in Feb 1993 was either a 15 minute or 30 min delay

Yes.  They had Hillsborough live in 1989.  I remember that as it was my first vivid memory of watching the FA Cup.

Yeah they also had FA Cup.  I remember Blackburn v Newcastle Feb 1993 in the 5th round being on RTE

I usually dont want the FA Cup especially the early rounds.  Looked up the scoreline to this game since you left this post.

1-0

What's so amazing about this?Confused

The early rounds are the only rounds to watch. Who wants tonsee all premier league ties in the late stages. Boring. Gimme newcastle cambridge type games every day of the week.

TBH I barely watch it and only watch the final if I'm at home and there's nothing else on tv.

The FA Cup died when they knocked down the old Wembley and even then since about 1996 it was on the slide.

Since then its a 3rd rate competition and doesnt capture my imagination anymore.

I kind of agree its not the same since the old wembley has gone. I loved watching games in that stadium. I cudnt be bothered watching the final these days or even the semi final unless a small team makes it. Still like the old fashioned big team v small team ties in the 3rd and 4th round though.

There used to be a certain tradition to the FA Cup.  The walk up the steps to get the cup, the twin towers, the cup final song, the tv build up from early morning etc... That's what the FA Cup was and its all gone now.

The decline started in 1991 with the Wembley semi finals.   That took a certain gloss off of reaching Wembley which was a privilege for finalists only.

Then the next step in the decline was sponsoring the cup with Littlewoods coming in.

Then the Champions League spots going to top 3 in the league in the late 90s.

Then moving to Cardiff.

The new Wembley is a soulless bowl and cant recapture the magic of the old stadium.

It has died a death and only small clubs take it seriously.  Money ruined it and money will ruin the World Cup and European Championships also.

You forgot Man United pulling out of it one year to play in the club World Cup
