Is it true electric cars are far better for avoiding repairs as the engines aren't run on fire?
It would damage this forums' reputation

No engine at all, just one or more electric motors so shouldn't be any issues in that respect.

I read something somewhere that a taxi drivers EV battery died and he had to pay a 5 figure sum to get it replaced and the car was relatively new.
It was far across the sea,
When the devil got a hold of me,
He wouldn't set me free,
So he kept me soul for ransom.

Can be pricey alright to replace them. Not sure which Manufacturer it was (or if it's still the case) but on top of buying the car you rented the battery off them for a monthly fee which meant it would just be replaced if it ever degraded too much.

A number of years ago you couldn't even get finance on electric cars as no one knew what the residual valued would be in 3-5 years. Things have moved on a bit since then thankfully.

I wasn't Embarrassed

But point stands, less maintenance + fuel (cough) costs = better savings on an electric car over the life of an engine run car?

Fuel savings is the big one versus the cost of a full charge at home (Less than €10 I think). Outside of engine issues you'll still have the very same mechanicals such as suspension, brakes and even some sort of a cooling system for the motor and batteries. Battery life and range are the big one. Was in a mates new eGolf last weekend and on a full charge it's claimed range is 300km but he's yet to get 200km. I think electric cars work perfectly for short urban driving or even as a second car in a house.

I thought you were making a joke about some electric cars like of going on fire!

Less moving parts = less maintenance, but the battery technology is still in relative infancy so battery issues are common.

Thumbs Up

If I go electric I'd be looking at Lucid. I wouldn't get a Tesla as Musk is such a dick.

Didn't know cost wasn't a factor in your car purchase!

Saw a lovely motor today.  5 series BMW 2 litre diesel.  Would this be a bad buy for city driving commutes mostly and the odd trip to the sticks/big smoke?

My fear would be the filters clogging up but then some other lad reckons its not an issue as long as you bring it for a 30 min spin at the weekends.

What's lads experience of diesel.

I probably do 5000-8000 miles a year.

The problem with 5series (and most BMWs) is the price of repairs when they inevitably go wrong.

The 30min spin doesn’t always clear out DPFs and they’re pricey when they give issues too.

5-8k miles you’d be fine with a petrol, most new petrols are getting similar if not better MPG than slightly older diesels.

I’ve ‘21 skoda superb 1.5 petrol and it’s more powerful (150bhp-140bhp) and is better on fuel than the 2015 Hyundai i40 1.7 diesel I traded in against it.
Like everything just do your research before buying
