Some channels operate better than others. So manually set the channel to either 1 or 14, most default to 4-8.
There are different types of WIFI frequencies primarily 2.4 & 5 GHz. You could try changing either of these - 2.4 - longer range - slower speeds. 5GHz - shorter range but higher speeds I've a horizon box and couldn't be arsed f**king around with these settings so bought the Belkin extender for 25e |

Yes it's not great. The horizon box doesn't have an antenna which is part of the problem too.
I've a separate router too for the wireless but you can only have one active STP and have no splitter for the coax cable. UPC cutting corners and taking short-cuts to get the box out to customers. |

It is pure rubbish, as are the Technicolor routers they send you if you are taking broadband only for them, I sent it straight back and got a Cisco which can be put in to gateway only mode and use my own router. Using your own router with the Horizon box means you'll be double NAT for anything connecting to it the second box, makes certain things unusable such as online gaming, not as much an issue for other things but it'll slow up your network.

You are not double NATing anything. I use a splitter for the STP and one for the router, as I said you can only have one active box, so the horizon box from a network perspective is idle and deactivated. (If you plug a cable into the horizon box with an active router, you will not get out to the internal because it's disabled). I use the horizon box now as the WAP as I am waiting for my electrician to wire up the splitter so I can use other router that I have. |

Dropping Setanta/Eir & BT Sports from their package. So Eir will be the only provider with this available?
Probably a good thing as sports package with Sky and everything else bundled in is mad money.

I didn't realise Sky were getting the 3pm Saturday kick offs. That is interesting.
Also good that the monthly bill will be going down, I suppose. But what does it mean for Champions League matches that RTE and TV3 choose not to broadcast? You know what, I reckon I've figured it out. Eir wanted the same amount from Virgin they were currently getting, per customer. Virgin decided they were going to pay less, as a result of sky now owning the rights to the 3pm kick offs. I don't know whether Virgin are paying sky more (I'm guessing they aren't, seeing as the price hasn't went up for ordinary sky tv customers). Virgin were basically going to shaft their own customers (pay Eir less than they are currently paying, charge its own customers the same price, no reduction), Eir told them to get lost, Virgin threatened to pull out completely unless a lower price was agreed, and Eir called their bluff. There are two options now: 1) Virgin go back with their tails between their legs and pay Eir what they were previously paying them (despite getting less actual content now) or 2) Eir realise what a massive loss it is and agree to some sort of reduction that doesn't harm their business model. It seems like a clash of negotiating egos, rather than a smart business decision, on one if not both sides there. |

I just checked out Eir: they only offer 60 MB broadband where I live. Just did a speed check there now and I'm getting 80 MB over wifi with Virgin.
Absolute pain in the arse. I don't want to have to sign up with Sky (the cost of getting a second box is 179 if you want a + box that you can rewind), I don't want to sign up with Eir (the broadband speeds are terrible, and that 60 MB is pretty far from guaranteed), I just want Virgin to keep Eir Sports on their f**king platform. It's a total shambles. |

Jesus Dave, 60 Mbps is fricken fast. What are you doing that you need more?
I just did a speed test and I'm getting 19 Mbps which allows me to seamlessly stream live TV. I don't recall any buffering in the past 12 months. |

Dodgy Box all the way lads ... Saving over €100 a month & I have absolutely every channel under the sun . Al Jazeera are looking to get in on the football & will be bidding with their big oil money backed bosses & will continue to increase the sub & also add to more channels needed for viewing football . €100 a month x 12 months equals 1200 for following Ireland on away trips for the year

There's often three of us trying to stream at the same time, and the reliability is great with Virgin. We don't have any speed issues and, frankly, I'd like to keep it that way. With Eir, peak times have much lower speeds than the advertised speeds. Also, live streaming quality is much worse than watching directly on the box. I just wish Virgin weren't such cheapskates, is all. It's obvious they went looking a reduction, that they weren't going to pass on, they didn't get it, and they've thrown their own customers under the bus. |

Fair enough chief. Fwiw we have two devices that stream seamlessly at the same time. I take it that virgin media customers are now in a position to terminate the contract as it's material change to the agreement. That would be the case in the UK. Would I be correct in saying that about Ireland? Edited by colemanY2K - 19 Jul 2016 at 8:00am |

I was thinking that would be the case. More than likely the protections were implemented as part of a EU directive across the EU. It's good to see as these Corporations are blood sucking b@st@rds.

Not much Virgin Media can do here as Eir own the Setanta/BT package now and obviously using the package to increase their own subscribers.
