This is the first time I've heard this. If it's true it's truly shocking particularly considering JD was in Poland at the time picking up a bar tab for a similar figure. |

True. Don't know how right it is but I heard before that there was a debt of 6 or 7k at the time. If the community cant gather together to get that type of money to keep things going you know you really are screwed.

Agree fully, match to match is not the way to do things, but for some it's the only option. On promotion we had to upgrade certain things, nothing major but it was all done on tick. The whole area from the stand around the back of the goal had to be cleared and brought up to standard etc.. The sponsor was an issue of course, and we had one Lin place in the weeks running up to us pulling out which was vetoed by the FAI. That was the final nail so to speak. Regardless of that, should we have had commanded decent gates we would have survived, and given some of our better results, could have stayed up ahead of Dundalk at the time.

I fully appreciate LoI clubs can only look so far ahead and what not, but relying on a match to match gate is a recipe for disaster. I never understood how their costs rose so quickly following promotion, fair enough they signed a few mediocre players but the wages hardly grew that big? And there was bigger crowds...from memory you couldn't get a sponsor and that was the main issue? |

From Collins to Fenlon to Buckley, they are all able to see.
They can see the number of people attending games and they can see the figures on the contracts of players they sign. Unless they are totally clueless altogether they know how sustainable/unsustainable finances are and they use the "board approved budget" nonsense to burn clubs for their own vainglorious reasons. |
