That was the greatest thing I have ever seen.
Vol. Fergal O'Brien had the unbreakable concentration and will of an IRA bomber staring at an imaginary dot on the wall while under interrogation by the Brits. After a 2:30 am finish two nights ago, he ground down and crushed England's David Gilbert in the longest frame in the history of snooker. What an Irishman. |

Drew Mark Selby in the first round. If Selby is on some kind of form, he should have too much for Fergal, but if he isn't, Fergal is one of the very, very few that could out-grind Selby. The other 2 that may be capable of similar, Ebdon & Dott, are also in the draw, but thankfully for the viewers, not against each other......

They certainly are tough to watch, and there is no craic in seeing 2 players with the same cautious safety game & taking an age to select a shot playing each other. I do find it fascinating to see one of those lads playing V a relatively normal snooker player, like John Higgins or Robertson or Marco Fu though, just to see the contrast in styles and just how much fellas like Ebdon mess with peoples heads.
When I was younger, I only wanted to see Jimmy White & later, Ronnie, potting balls from all angles & making big breaks, but as some fella once said, if that was what it was all about, the game would be called 'potting balls' & not snooker. It also explains why Ronnie, although more talented than Hendry, doesn't have the same amount of world titles, it is a weakness in his mental game that exceptional headwreckers like Ebdon or Dott can sometimes (maybe 1 out of 5 or 6 times) exploit. Selby actually has the potential to win more than Hendry did, maybe that's a big statement, but if he is concentrating hard, his mental game is nearly as tough as the 2 lads & Fergal, but he is a far superior potter (on form) than any of those, it is a difficult combination to beat in the long frame format of the WC. |

Rory McCloed is 46! Definitely wouldn't have guessed that.
Entertaining match last night between Fu and Robertson. Both were well off their game though.

Who first thought it would be a good idea sticking Peter Ebdon in the commentary box?He is the most boring man in the world! Bad enough having the 'great WT' having an orgasm every time Mark Selby pots the ball. At least Ebdon hasn't mentioned he is a vegan yet this year, someone has obviously had a word there.
Higgins just put him back in his box nicely. Virgo has done it a few times in commentary too.

You have to feel for Virgo, the commentary box is tiny and he is stuck in it with a vegan.
