Milan beat them 4-0 in Napoli a few weeks ago too. But most teams will have a sh*te game or two in the Champions League. I'd still expect them to go through.

Definitely not looking as good. Lacked discipline last night as well, Osimhen is a big miss for them. Having said that 2nd leg in Naples will be a different story, Milan may regret not getting a 2nd goal in the San Siro.

Interesting commentary for the BBC on the state of Italian football, by Daniele Verri (Italian football journalist) here: On the one hand: "Overall,
there are six Italian clubs in the quarter-finals of the three European
competitions, a quarter of the total; Milan, Napoli and Inter are
joined by Juventus and Roma in the Europa League and Fiorentina in the
Conference League. One
Italian club is guaranteed to play in the Champions League semi-finals,
and it will be two if Inter can eliminate Portuguese opponents for a
second round in succession."
On the other: "Asked about the potential renaissance of Italian football, [national team manager Roberto] Mancini said: 'It hasn't happened, this is club football. Only six or seven Italian players are actually part of Napoli, Milan and Inter's starting XIs. 'Thirty-three players would have been fantastic; 50% of them good, 30% also OK. The thing is, some U19 games in Italy take place without a single Italian player on the pitch.' It is a fact that Italian clubs have a problem with their academies. Where are all the present and future Pirlos, Tottis and Del Pieros?" |

Some lead by Napoli, 15 points and 24 goals. They can afford to rest players in the league when they've Champions League games.

Comparing Napoli to Leicester is a bit of a stretch! They have the best players in the league! The Champions League is very open this year with no stand out team! Man City, Bayern, PSG and Madrid have all been average in the league this season.

Eintracht, who qualified for the CL by winning last season's Europa League, got this far by finishing 2nd to Spurs in one of the weakest Groups. And although they're only 5 point off the top of the Bundesliga, that still only leaves them 6th. Form is ok - since the break they've beaten Schalke (hopeless) 3-0 at home; drawn 1-1 at Freiburg (high-flying) and 1-1 at Bayern. While Napoli's recent record in the CL is barely mediocre, never getting past the last 16, and hardly any better in the Europa League: I wonder whether Napoli might not be doing another Leicester City/2015-16 - saw their chance in their domestic league, but don't have enough for Europe as well? Anyhow, FiveThirtyEight gives Napoli a 7% chance of winning the CL, behind Bayern 24%, Man City 21% and Real Madrid also 7%, and just ahead of Liverpool and Benfica on 6%: Edited by Territorial - 30 Jan 2023 at 1:32pm |

Couple of interesting Serie A results today: AC Milan 2 v 5 Sassuoolo - now 4 games without a win for Milan (2 defeats, 2 draws), while Sassuolo (17th before today) came into this game on a bad run of 4 defeats and a draw. Milan are home to Spurs in the CL on 14th February (1st leg), with their form hardly any better than that of their opponents. Juventus 0 v 2 Monza - Never rains but it pours for Juve, to lose to Monza, who are n their first ever season in Serie A after a record 40 years in Serie B. Their recent rise came after a certain Silvio Berlusconi took over in 2018 when they were actually in Serie C- there'll be some Bunga Bunga party tonight! Meanwhile, Napoli are 1-0 up at H-T at home to Roma -- clinch that one and they'll be 13 points ahead of Inter in second:

UEFA originally decided to expand the CL to 36 teams (from 32) and play a Round Robin format (to guarantee each entrant more games), in the hope that this would head off the ESL. This was to take effect from 2024/25. Two of the additional teams would continue to qualify by the normal route, but another two were to be selected from those teams which hadnt qualified by the usuall means but which had the best CL record over the previous five years. Due to protests from other clubs etc, also the struggle of the ESL to get off the ground, UEFA has dropped this backdoor entry for two clubs - all four addotional slots will need to be filled by the usual means. By the way, even if UEFA had kept the proposed new system, Juve wouldnt have been close to availing of it, since their recent CL record, like all Italian clubs, has been pretty dismal. Rather, it would most likely have been a Spanish and an English club which benefited, though most unusually, had it been applied for next season, it would have been an Englsih and a Dutch team.

Is it next season that UEFA have a rule that clubs like Juventus will always qualify for the champions league regardless of where they come in Serie A. It's coming in very soon.
