Sochi appears to be the dogs bollix....check this out. 2018 FIFA World Cup in Sochi: football and skiing During the breaks in the Sochi World Cup games the fans will be able to
sunbathe on the shore of a warm sea and go downhill skiing. The championship
will take place in the summer of 2018 at the Fisht Olympic stadium, which was
named after the highest peak in the region and was designed to look like that
snow-covered mountain. The Fisht Stadium with its unique semi-transparent roof that looks like an ice cap on a mountain peak will be put into operation next year. Already now it is considered to be the best technically equipped stadium in the world. For example, its sports arena can be easily converted into a theater stage. From its stands the visitors will be able to see both the sea and the snow-covered tops of the Caucasus Mountains. After the 2014 Winter Olympics the stadium will be slightly modified, points out Vladislav Funtyakov, chairman of the Football Federation of the city of Sochi. «The main sports arena where the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics will take place will be modified. The number of visitor seats will be increased by a few thousands. It is located in the Imeritin lowlands, on the coast. There is nothing like this in the world». Sochi is frequently called the Russian Riviera. The city is spread out 140 km along the shore of the Black sea. The unique local climate in the summer allows people to simultaneously bathe in the warm sea and go downhill skiing. One can use the cable railway to get to the mountains from the coast. From its cars one gets an amazing view of the area. Tatiana Kontsevaya, the director of the Sochi History Museum is convinced that tourists will have no time to be bored. «There are remarkable architectural monuments in the city as well as a rich historical and cultural heritage. One can learn about the history of the city from ancient times to modern days. The nature is very beautiful. There is a lot to see here. In addition, it would be interesting to sample the Caucasian cuisine». Not far from the city natural parks with waterfalls and caves are located, in addition, the stone dwellings of the ancient people called the dolmens are preserved here. Tourists will be offered to sample the traditional shashlik (shish kebab), Ossetia pies made as quick bread with meat or vegetables, and of course, house wines. There are many vineyards in the Caucasian Mountains. One can reach the Russian Riviera by airplane. The Sochi International Airport built in 1945 was recently renovated specifically for the 2014 Winter Olympics. It is now one of the largest airports in Russia. It can accommodate up to 2 million passengers per year. Besides that, there is a railway station in Sochi, the building of which is an architectural monument. The sea port which is currently being actively renovated and developed will turn into the largest cruise ports on the Black sea in the next few years. After the renovation, two cruise ships each about 300 meters long and a ferry can simultaneously dock in the port. In addition, a yacht marine for 300 yachts will appear on the Sochi coast. |

Jerome Valcke reckons it's much better to organise World Cups in countries run by dictators than World Cups held in democracies
Says it all really about their decision to give the World Cup to Russia and Qatar (albeit neither are dictatorships both have very shady governments). Jerome Valcke: Fifa chief says too much democracy can be hindranceFifa secretary general Jerome Valcke has said too much democracy can be a hindrance when organising a World Cup. Valcke said one of the reasons Fifa had encountered problems in organising the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was the various levels of government in the South American nation. He expects fewer problems arising for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. "I will say something which is crazy, but less democracy is sometimes better for organising a World Cup," he said. Valcke was speaking at the start of a four-day symposium debating the FIFA World Cup as an event. The conference is due to discuss a range of topics including the role that dictatorships and democracies have played in past tournaments and, Fifa say, "the multiculturalism and commercialisation that has defined the past two decades". Valcke told delegates: "When you have a very strong head of state who can decide, as maybe [President Vladimir] Putin can do in 2018... that is easier for us organisers than a country such as Germany, where you have to negotiate at different levels. "The main fight we have [is] when we enter a country where the political structure is divided, as it is in Brazil, into three levels - the federal level, the state level and the city level. "[There are] different people, different movements, different interests and it's quite difficult to organise a World Cup in such conditions." |

Surely the 2022 World Cup in Qatar means it can't be in China in 2026? Successive tournaments can't be held in the same continent, or at least in a country under the same confederation? |

Wonder what they will do for the 100th anniversary of the World Cup, will they return to Uruguay, play it in England or do a Worldwide event?
