The new build 45,000 seater Stadium in Kazan, Tartarstan hopes to get a Quarter-Final in 2018. Kazan is the venue for the XXVII Universiade (World Student Games), 12 events compulsory. Hopefully Ireland can send a Mens and Women's team next year. The IUFA didn't send Football teams to Shenchen near Hong Kong in 2011.
http://kazan2013.com/media-department/news/kazan-has-every-chance-of-hosting-2018-fifa-world-cup-quarterfinal/" rel="nofollow - http://kazan2013.com/media-department/news/kazan-has-every-chance-of-hosting-2018-fifa-world-cup-quarterfinal/
Having concluded their tour of Kazan’s FIFA World Cup competition and non-competition venues, the delegation of the Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee headed by its CEO Alexey Sorokin together with representatives of the FIFA inspection team led by Jürgen Müller.
Sorokin "The matches will be distributed on the principle of a stadium’s compliance with FIFA’s seating and capacity requirements and based on the draw results. Semifinals of the FIFA World Cup must be staged in stadiums able to seat the minimum of 60,000 people, while stadiums bidding to host the final must have the capacity of not less than 80,000 people,» said Alexey Sorokin, CEO of the Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee.
Special consideration was also given to fans’ safety at football matches. The experience of the 2012 UEFA Euro Cup that is currently taking place in Poland and Ukraine has demonstrated again the significance of developing a code of conduct for football fans and providing safety at such high-profile events as football championships.
Müller
For his part, Jürgen Müller, FIFA’s head of the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, said that the results of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Host Cities selection process would be revealed as early as in September 2012.

September 29th 2012 is the promised big day for the announcement of venues for Russia 2018. Up to TWO venues may be cut from a current list of THIRTEEN. (unlucky for some).

"A FIFA delegation spent much of the spring and summer visiting the 13 candidate cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Yekaterinburg, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Saransk, Volgograd, Sochi, Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don."
cannot wait.

Kazan is turning out to be quite a good place for football. They have a pretty nice stadium and a good team to go along with it. Will be a great venue both for the Student Games and the World Cup.

That would make sense, but seeing as Russia will probably want to make an impression they're likely to build a few new ones, if not most.

Far too much emphasis on the stadium and not enough on the infrastrcture necessary for a big finals as we saw in Ukraine this summer. Lovely stadiums but empty seats at most matches because fans couldn't/wouldn't travel

While I understand why the final will be at the Luzhniki,I think it's an awful stadium to have it in it's current state.Major games should be kept well away from stadia with running tracks

If Joe Senior was still around he wouldn't let any of that sh*t happen...another five year plan and they be sorted Some great potential host cities...would echo corkery above ... I would love to go to Volgograd. The biggest pain in the hole though would Kalinigrad. The logistics of getting across Belarus or Ukraine for the group games would be a balls plus you would need a double entry visa for Russia. Can't see it making the final list.

it's a class stadium, was pleasantly surprised how much you can see despite the track, no worries on atmosphere either, was more than half empty when we played and noise was incredible

Russia reveals World Cup venues
September 30, 2012
FIFA have announced the 11 cities which will host matches during the 2018 World Cup. The
tournament wil comprise of 64 matches and will be staged at 12
different stadiums with Moscow being the only city with two venues
selected - those of Luzhniki, which hosted the 2008 Champions League
final, and Spartak. Sochi, who will stage the 2014 Winter
Olympics, St Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan,
Samara, Saransk, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don and Ekaterinburg will also
host matches. Yaroslavl and Krasnodar missed out on being named host
cities after putting in bids. "The announcement of the host cities
is the first concrete step taken in the delivery of the 2018 FIFA World
Cup," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said. "They make a decisive contribution to the success of the most popular sporting
event. We look forward to a productive partnership on our road to the first FIFA
World Cup in Eastern Europe. "We are very pleased with the pace of the 2018 LOC (Local Organising
Committee) from day one when they were awarded the hosting of the event in
December 2010. Their achievements show their enthusiasm and commitment." Vitaly Mutko, Russian minister of sport and chairman of the Russia 2018 LOC,
said: "The final selection of the 2018 FIFA World Cup host cities is an
important milestone en route to hosting the tournament in 2018. "This decision launches the full-scale preparation for the FIFA World Cup in
the 11 host cities across the country." Russia beat England and joint bids from Holland/Belgium and Spain/Portugal in December 2010 for the right to host the World Cup.

Sochi appears to be the dogs bollix....check this out. 2018 FIFA World Cup in Sochi: football and skiing During the breaks in the Sochi World Cup games the fans will be able to
sunbathe on the shore of a warm sea and go downhill skiing. The championship
will take place in the summer of 2018 at the Fisht Olympic stadium, which was
named after the highest peak in the region and was designed to look like that
snow-covered mountain.
The Fisht Stadium with its unique semi-transparent roof that looks
like an ice cap on a mountain peak will be put into operation next year. Already
now it is considered to be the best technically equipped stadium in the world.
For example, its sports arena can be easily converted into a theater stage. From
its stands the visitors will be able to see both the sea and the snow-covered
tops of the Caucasus Mountains. After the 2014 Winter Olympics the stadium will
be slightly modified, points out Vladislav Funtyakov, chairman of the Football
Federation of the city of Sochi.
«The main sports arena where the opening and closing ceremonies of
the Winter Olympics will take place will be modified. The number of visitor
seats will be increased by a few thousands. It is located in the Imeritin
lowlands, on the coast. There is nothing like this in the world».
Sochi is frequently called the Russian Riviera. The city is spread
out 140 km along the shore of the Black sea. The unique local climate in the
summer allows people to simultaneously bathe in the warm sea and go downhill
skiing. One can use the cable railway to get to the mountains from the coast.
From its cars one gets an amazing view of the area. Tatiana Kontsevaya, the
director of the Sochi History Museum is convinced that tourists will have no
time to be bored.
«There are remarkable architectural monuments in the city as well
as a rich historical and cultural heritage. One can learn about the history of
the city from ancient times to modern days. The nature is very beautiful. There
is a lot to see here. In addition, it would be interesting to sample the
Caucasian cuisine».
Not far from the city natural parks with waterfalls and caves are
located, in addition, the stone dwellings of the ancient people called the
dolmens are preserved here. Tourists will be offered to sample the traditional
shashlik (shish kebab), Ossetia pies made as quick bread with meat or
vegetables, and of course, house wines. There are many vineyards in the
Caucasian Mountains.
One can reach the Russian Riviera by airplane. The Sochi
International Airport built in 1945 was recently renovated specifically for the
2014 Winter Olympics. It is now one of the largest airports in Russia. It can
accommodate up to 2 million passengers per year. Besides that, there is a
railway station in Sochi, the building of which is an architectural monument.
The sea port which is currently being actively renovated and developed will turn
into the largest cruise ports on the Black sea in the next few years. After the
renovation, two cruise ships each about 300 meters long and a ferry can
simultaneously dock in the port. In addition, a yacht marine for 300 yachts will
appear on the Sochi coast.

Jerome Valcke reckons it's much better to organise World Cups in countries run by dictators than World Cups held in democracies Says it all really about their decision to give the World Cup to Russia and Qatar (albeit neither are dictatorships both have very shady governments).
Jerome Valcke: Fifa chief says too
much democracy can be hindrance
Fifa secretary
general Jerome Valcke has said too much democracy can be a hindrance when
organising a World Cup.
Valcke said one of the reasons Fifa had encountered http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20502918" rel="nofollow - - the 2018 World Cup
in Russia.
"I will say something which is crazy, but less democracy is sometimes better
for organising a World Cup," he said.
Valcke was speaking at the start of a four-day symposium debating the FIFA
World Cup as an event.
The conference is due to discuss a range of topics including the role that
dictatorships and democracies have played in past tournaments and, Fifa say,
"the multiculturalism and commercialisation that has defined the past two
decades".
Valcke told delegates: "When you have a very strong head of state who can
decide, as maybe [President Vladimir] Putin can do in 2018... that is easier for
us organisers than a country such as Germany, where you have to negotiate at
different levels.
"The main fight we have [is] when we enter a country where the political
structure is divided, as it is in Brazil, into three levels - the federal level,
the state level and the city level.
"[There are] different people, different movements, different interests and
it's quite difficult to organise a World Cup in such conditions."

Uruguayan plans to bid for the centenary World Cup have been going for a decade now. But seeing as it's too small a country to host a 32-team World Cup, they hope to co-host it with Argentina:-
http://www.argentinauruguay2030.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.argentinauruguay2030.com/
The campaign for the 2030 World Cup has started so early because of what happened to Athens for the centenary Olympics in 1996. It was generally assumed that they would get it, only to be beaten by Atlanta in the end. Through bribery it later turned out. Not a stretch to imagine China have the means to do something similar.
I'll be an old man by 2030, but for years I've taken to the idea of going to the centenary World Cup in Uruguay as my last football trip, so I hope it happens. Besides, you just know that FIFA will cynically decreed that Qatar is actually Middle East, not Asia, so China can get the 2024 World Cup.

...first of all whether it was farking mental or not the Russians wanted Kalinigrad to host games for political purposes and FIFA made it happen. Transportation wise (trains) it would be mental but you know full well the visa restrictions will be lifted by the Russians.

Three candidates reach the final voting for the Mascot for Russia 2018.
Wolf (volk), Cat (kot) and Tiger (tiger). As shown the first two professions are athletes and the tiger's profession is cosmonaut.

Is it me or could the Wolfs thumbs up easily be mistaken for giving the middle finger there Maybe it's Putins way of telling a lot of countries to go feck themselves

Russia played their friendly tonight in Chechnya off all places. Obviously trying to win some love before the WC. If you watch the highlights, the crowd are decked in patriotism. Romania robbed of a penalty and the injury time Russian winner looks like a clear offside.

I bet FIFA won't laugh if the US asks to be the 33rd team...........
------------- Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

Not sure how they wrangled into that position after finishing 5th in South America with a goal difference of +1 However I'm delighted to see them qualify after a soon-to-be 36 year wait. Hon Peru
