  • An association may have a maximum of five teams in the Champions League. Therefore, if both the Champions League and Europa League title holders come from the same top-four association and finish outside of the top four of their domestic league, the fourth-placed team of the league will not compete in the Champions League and will instead compete in the Europa League.

Looks to me from the above, plus the way the CL/EL is working out this season, that there is no way the team finishing fifth in the PL can play in next season's CL unless they win this season's CL or EL.

Which if correct, means MU must finish Top Four to get in the CL next season.

The only way this will happen is if one of those teams wins either competition and also doesn't finish in the top 4, ie Chelsea or Arsenal. It is more likely though that one will finish in the top 4 and also win the Europa League, meaning that just the top 4 will be in Champs League.

Exactly.

There is the following possibility: United finish fourth. Spurs finish fifth or sixth but win the CL. Arsenal or Chelsea finish fifth or sixth but win the EL. In that case, United would *not* get a CL place. E.g.

City 1st - into the CL
Liverpool 2nd - into the CL
Arsenal 3rd - into the CL
United 4th - into the EL
Spurs 5th - win the CL - into the CL
Chelsea 6th - win the EL - into the CL

You can move Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea around but the position is the same - if the teams finishing 5th and 6th both win a European competition, the team in 4th do not get a CL place.

I think it is worth pointing out that is by far the least likely scenario

Of course. There is a chance of Chelsea winning the EL and finishing outside the top 4, and the same for Arsenal, but I think it is quite unlikely that Spurs will win the CL, never mind win it while also finishing outside the top 4 along with the above happening.

I think Spurs fans would love it if United were third, Arsenal fourth, Spurs fifth and Chelsea sixth, with Spurs and Chelsea winning the European trophies... although that is even more unlikely.

No problem if all those mentioned go in the next 18 months but there isnt a hope that 10/12 leave this summer,5 would be doing well.

Rojo,Valencia,Darmian, and Sanchez all leaving would be a good summer of exits.

Unless there is a major change in transfer business then the club hasnt much hope of a turn around.

That Sanchez deal will end up being a massive mistake for Man U.

Everybody will be benchmarking their wages against his.

Hard to disagree with the Guardian's synopsis.
Might have been harsh on Lukaku, a decent striker but there's obviously better out there.
Fred, personally I think is malignant, but has only been there a year so might be worth a look for another season

At least Dalot's pretty face is still intact the flute.

United completely lethargic the last couple of weeks. You'd swear it was a pre-season friendly today.

Took it well Sigurdsson but De Gea should've done better. De Gea needs to be dropped and rested for a couple of games. He was poor at the start of the season and in the world cup and seems to have gotten back to that bad form.
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.
