That one is brutal, beyond cringey. The one with Paul O'Conell is equally gaulling.

If you ever have yourself described as a superfan in an article it’s either time to stop going or taken out a libel action against the media organisation.

We have our own lads who believe themselves to be super fans going to football games too.  International duty and all that rubbish.  It’s a holiday with football and drink thrown in.  It’s not national service.

Slightly different mentality with this team than those that previously attended RWC’s. Even accounting for last night, they should be in a position to go further than before.
Don’t they say this all the time. Was the same in 2019 before that World Cup they were suppose to be winning that aswell under Joe Schmidt.

Always in the context of being a ‘dark horse’ rather than a real contender.
They were talking about winning it 2019 nothing about ‘Dark Horses’ then when they didn’t win part of the excuse was it was so far away from home player boredom etc.

Certainly it was seen as ‘dark horse’ territory, with the usual default expectation of NZ winning because people hadn’t been tracking them. SA were also well tipped. At worst, it was the same Irish talking heads that have been mistakenly saying the same thing since 2007. It’s akin to the narrative on here about rugby which is as predictable as night following day, and has been the same for years.
They were the No.1 ranked team in the world before the 2019 World Cup and the media openly saying they’ll win the World Cup and the Southern Hemisphere saying how dangerous Ireland will be and the team to currently beat. Then the usual happened again as always.

It wasn’t the ‘usual’. The failures have happened in different ways and for different reasons.
I think it was the usual, 2007 didn't get out of the group, 2011 beaten in the QF  by a terrible Wales team, 2015 beaten by an excellent Argentina team when Irish fans were actively looking over this match and buying tickets for the Semi Finals against France (Clueless fans), 2019 scrapped through the group and then annihilated by New Zealand in the QF. I think they will struggle to get out of the group again TBH. Scotland could easily beat them.

2007 was one of the few occasions where there is a genuine argument that our own hubris and complacency beat us before we arrived. The whole WC was a disaster. 2011, well, Wales were not actually 'terrible', they matched our 2011 Six Nations performance, and won successive six nations championship thereafter. 2015 was an aberration due to the massive number of injuries sustained in the week prior to the Argentina game (exacerbated by Bowe's early injury in the game). After going 17-0 down, Ireland brought it back to a 3 point gap, and didnt have the strength in depth to capitalise. 2019 was more of 2007.

Scotland could beat them, I agree. Its a group of death, and Ireland have their work cut out for them.

RWC starts tonight with France v New Zealand. My only prediction is that the winner will come from the left hand side of the draw (i.e. Group A/ Group B). France on home soil have that added advantage, but South Africa will be strong.

England's group will be interesting, especially given their poor form. They always show well at the RWC.

I think the winner of the tournament is either France or New Zealand.

Ireland are kind of f**ked. They'll have to play one of them in the next round.

There is no obvious benefit to coming first or second in the group. Either the hosts or the AB's await. Truth is, if Ireland go one stage further than they have before it will actually become easier (at least on paper).

I think Ireland would prefer to face France in the Quarters. We play them every year and beat them regularly enough nowadays. The All Blacks are unpredictable, if they cut loose they could still hammer any team on their day.

Ireland home with their tail between their legs before the semis once again. They'll win their mini tournament in the spring then and all will be well again.
