That's definitely true but that in no way should denigrate all the other team sports like rugby, hockey, basketball, cricket. Football is a freak sport and an outlier in that it is popular on all five continents. Most other sports (including all the Olympic ones) don't have anywhere near that type of reach and popularity - but that shouldn't be used as a reason to dismiss them or claim that it is not an achievement to do well in them. The likes of Muhammed Ali, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer etc all became global superstars in sports that are dominated by only a few countries.

It’s time Sky took up an option on the great sport of Irish Road Bowls, which has produced most of its stars from Armagh and Cork. Why not ? Curling, lacrosse and all other eccentric minority sports have had their turn.

Fair play to Sexton passing out the 100 points mark. Only 100 or so behind O'Gara now. No guarantees he'll pass him but we've had the 2 greatest Irish outhalves back to back now and Humphreys before wasn't bad either.

Considering no other team has won a test series in NZ in the professional era and very few before that, it is a great achievement.
The comparing to football and the use of the word 'world' when only 10 countries are competitive is just ignorant. It is true that there are not as many competitive but the Irish players are top of their profession, something you can't say about many other sports. So fair play to them. |

That's my point, it's used to bash rugby but most sports are the same. I have no idea in cricket if Australia beating India is a qualifier, a world cup match or a friendly. But it seems a big deal to the supporters so why would I get the hump just because I support a different sport. If those supporters all agree that it's a big game, who am I to disagree? |

Its a great win I don't think anyone is denying that but it's the lack of perspective that generally follows a result like the documentary on RTE after the win in Chicago. None the less Sexton actually quickly reaffirmed it would mean nothing should history repeat itself in 12 months time. The commentary however in the game yestersay said something like the 10 biggest minutes in Irish Rugby ever upon us thats nonsense.

Great achievement and great back to back performances after the disappointment of the first test. Truth is while it's never been done before, Ireland are one of the top sides in the world at the minute and New Zealand are at a low ebb (by their standards). I expected Ireland to win at least one on this tour and if history/pressure didn't get to them a series win was more than achievable. That played out because the 2nd test we hammered them everywhere except the scoreboard, and while NZ came back strong in the 3rd test I always felt Ireland would get things back under control.
The fact it has only been done by so few teams says a lot. One caveat to that stat though - South Africa and Australia don't "tour" NZ any more since the introduction of the Tri Nations in the 90s. They play eachother in the rugby championship. I think the last time SA toured NZ was 1994. If tours between the big three in the Southern Hemisphere were more common, I'd have expected Australia or especially SA to have won a tour or two in the last 25 years tbh.

Tony ward went one further and said it’s the greatest achievement by any Irish team ever. We wait Neil Francis views to top that.
