I'd imagine people are going to be a lot more interested going to the RDS and watching two ex Super Rugby teams as opposed to the likes of Newport Gwent Dragons or Treviso. How long that novelty appeal lasts is another question. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out.

They are bringing significant TV revenue. The Pro12 (or Pro14 now) is miles behind the English and French leagues in revenue terms and needs to catch up. South Africa is also in the same timezone so jet-lag is not is a real issue. They will apparently try to have teams playing two away games in South Africa play on successive Saturdays. This could be an attractive away trip for the fans too. I expect Champions Cup places may be on the table in future years. The real prize may also be all the South African teams in the future. These two are from the smaller cities of Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth but the bigger teams may also jump ship. Australia and New Zealand are also a long way from South Africa and are in totally different timezones for TV. Time will tell if it is a good move but probably the only option for our teams. Otherwise the gulf in revenues could make an Irish Champions Cup win an impossible dream in a few years time.

It finished 35-29 to the all blacks.
Probably one of the best matches of all time. Aus were leading with 4 mins to go. |
