if they use the same format as last time for WC qualifying, we are currently a second seed for 2022 Smile

That's if they even decide to keep it to a 32-team tournament or expand it to 48 teams but we won't know that until the FIFA congress in June, a month before the qualifying draw is due to take place.

Either way, we could well be in Pot 2, whatever the format they use. Better than Pot 4 anyway. Clap

But if you remove all their good players, we are nearly as good as them.

Last nights result and win on Monday must strengthen our 2nd seed position - so another positive from it.

EDIT: + Serbia  who we are level with lost and Romania, Just ahead of us, drew.

They’d be using Nations League results not FIFA rankings right? So we’d be one of the top League C teams hopefully.

As far as Im aware the FIFA have always used FIFA rankings and wouldn’t expect them to change for the next World Cup - I imagine someone in FIFA is protective if their ranking system and don’t think the federations have autonomy on this.

The 2016 euros used the old UEFA rankings system So their is already a situation of different ranking systems in use for UEFA and FIFA run competitions.

That would be good. Wonder how they’ll tie in the Nations League to the World Cup Qualifying. I know they mentioned perhaps League A and B teams having a backdoor playoff, which I hope won’t happen as we aren’t in it.

They have dropped three places as well.

That'll teach them.

Eire latest FIFA ranking 34th in the world.
That makes us ranked 20th in Europe.
Probably going to be 10 groups in UEFA qualifying for WC 2022 so as it stands we would be in Pot 2.
Draw for Qatar 2022 WC qualifiers probably won’t be until Nov 2020, after NL games.

Of the 20 teams already qualified for Euro 2020, only Russia and Czech Rep are currently ranked below us.
Only one team currently ranked above us that has not qualified (yet) is Slovakia.

The problem is that Euro 2020 performance affects FIFA rankings. We will lose all the points from Euro 2016 and, if we don't qualify for Euro 2020, not replace them with Euro 2020 points. That is going to cost us. If the 2022 World Cup qualifiers draw is after Euro 2020, then we will likely not be in the top 20.

Yet again, finishing bottom of our Nations League group has proven to be nothing but a total disaster. A higher finish and not only would we have had a better chance of qualifying directly for Euro 2020 but, even if we hadn't, we'd have been much more likely to have a home draw in the playoffs and an increased chance of qualifying.

The abject results in the Nations League have come back to bite us in the ass once again and just a reminder of the fine state we were left in at the end of the MO'N reign.

Thankfully, we are in a much better state now...

Actually, ignore my last post. FIFA ranking is no longer based on a time-limited average but works based on comparing each actual result with an expected result; if a team ranked 10th plays a team ranked 50th and draws, the team ranked 10th goes down and the team ranked 50th goes up. It means we don't lose 2016 points in 2020, or anything like it. However, it is still important for ranking points that we get good results against the teams around us.
