Feels like a long time since there's been anything much positive to say about James McCarthy, but he has had a big role in getting the win for Celtic today with a lovely through pass in the build up to their last minute winner.

Did great for it. He'll probably be demoted from the match day squad by Postecoglou as a reward

He did very well in the build up to the winner. Realistically he's not going to get enough opportunities at Celtic. If he got himself out on loan in January and playing regularly, it's not out of the question that we'd see him in the squad next year. He's 31, turning 32 later this year so it's possible he could do a job in the short term, as cover for Cullen. In all liklihood though he's played his last game for us.

Yeah time to move forward not backwards, id rather we take our chances and give the squad places to Smallbone, Coventry, Hodge or whoever else.

Sammon is darne good. Sammon is being kept on ice but he is ready to leap into action at any moment as he has been finding the net a lot. All the lads want him in the camp for the knowledge he brings.

Ridiculous, if only we had the luxury. Hourihane I'd agree, the others nah. Mc Carthy looks highly unlikely granted, but stranger things have happened. The other two are nailed on squad players fitness permitting!

They have stunk out the place for too long. Fresh new energy is whats needed not stale old furniture. Hourihane makes Glenn Whelan look like Iniesta

Great to see McCarthy get some minutes for Celtic and a Champions League debut is a feather in his cap.
Think his Ireland days are numbered and he might be better off playing a bit part role for a side like Celtic as I doubt he can play 90 minutes 25-30 times a season without injury if we are being straight.

On the bright side… he could come in to cover for McGregor and stay in on merit. If he had come on in the St.Johnstone game earlier, he could have managed the lead out for Celtic. Ange and Kenny take note.

I'd have rathered see him come on in the sitting midfield role against Armenia instead of Hourihane had he been in the squad. He would have just kept it tight, nothing fancy and we'd probably have won the game 2 or 3-0. He doesn't have a long term future with us, but if we're looking for short term cover for Cullen and Molumby he would do a job if he could stay fit for any length of time.

Defensive midfield is a position we're week in. We looked lost against Armenia without Cullen. Of the young lads mentioned Smallbone is probably most likely to graduate next, but he's an attacking mid. Kenny has already brought back Brady so if McCarthy got a loan move to the English championship and got back playing regularly (which I know he hasn't done in years), he could get a call up too. His experience could be handy in a qualifying campaign that runs for just 8 months. Similarly if Conor Coventry gets a loan/gametime then he's in the frame.

100% All these lads need to be permanently retired no point wasting squad places on them either. Time to build for the future

We're not in a position to be turning down someone like Brady. If he's fit and in form, he deserves a place in the squad.
He scored and assisted against Armenia. He's in decent form for Preston. He can play LWB, CM in a three, and even AM. Useful player. As for McCarthy/Hourihane/Hendrick... I think it's best to move on. Coventry, Smallbone and McGrath are all better options moving forward. Particularly McGrath if he can get back to his best form. Even Hodge if he can establish himself over the next few months.

If we’re serious about qualifying for Euros and IF James is playing virtue of a bad injury to CalMc then he would deserve to be in squad. Kenny is on record as being a big fan.

I can't recall an Ireland game where McCarthy really stood out, and he does seem like yesterday's man in some ways, but he's the most like for like replacement for Cullen, and if we need him and he's willing and able I am in favour of having him involved. He isn't playing a great deal so he might be keen to get a game. |
