I wouldn't be so sure - A lot of change in squad this summer. I'm not saying they won't be in trouble but there is enough change to mean that it isn't the same squad as last season and for that sole reason they might have a chance of doing better.

It’s a loan, he’s two years into his four year contract with Newcastle worth over £2 million a year. Reading will obviously not be paying his full salary and it is difficult to imagine that any other club would so presumably he is taking the opportunity to play every week at a decent level rather than fester with the under-23s under the Eddie Howe regime.

Newcastle will pay the balance I'd say. No way he drops from what Newcastle are paying him each week (£40k?) to what Reading would be paying (maybe £5-7k?). Still worthwhile for Newcastle to move him on if he wouldn't have been making their 25 man EPL squad and Jeff clearly wants to play games.

The beach is where most of us would be if we had Jeff’s money. That said, he is on loan for one year at Reading where the boss is a fellow midfielder ( Paul Ince ) who will be keen to get the best out of him, I think John O’Shea is still there too, and Jeff will be looking for one final big move if he can get one after this season.

Sounds like a good move for Jeffrey. Ince says he has admired him for a while so seems a good fit. Him playing every week is good news for us.

I don’t know Hendricks personal finances, but irish players in general have always appeared to have head screwed on and come home with money after their career ends (bar a minority like Ireland, Thornton, etc - but certainly most seem to come home with money) It’s a fair point, he could probably jack it in all in and come home without wanting for anything. He’s hardly on massive money with reading. I actually like Hendrick, has been disappointing at times for Ireland but overall I think hes actually done ok and has got undue stick at times

Good if he plays every week. But really we should be moving past Jeff at this stage.

He probably should not be starting at the moment on the back of the last window and how well Cullen, Molumby and Knight performed together. But I can't see him being excluded from the squad for the foreseeable future especially if he is playing anyways regular and playing well. A few from the likes of Coventry, Kilkenny, Ronan, Sykes, McGrath, O'Connor, Smallbone, etc really need to kick on this season for that to happen. But I would say it will be Hourihane that will be fazed out before Hendrick will.

I think Hendrick is a decent option to bring on in the last 20 minutes of a game whether we need a goal or have to hold onto a lead. I don't mind him starting if we're missing a few players in midfield but he'd be more effective for us as a sub imo. Hourihane though should be nowhere near the starting line up in future.

And why is that? He's only 30. If he's playing every week in championship, he'll be guaranteed to be in the squad. Were not blessed with midfielders players regularly in a higher division, are we?

He shouldn't be a nailed on starter but he still has plenty to offer. One of the few players we have with a penetrative pass in his locker. At 30 he has at least another campaign in him. It's Hourihane we need to be actively moving on from - not trusted to start any competitive games since 2020 (spanning World Cup Qualifiers & Nations League games), immobile, pushing 32, dropping down to League 1, etc etc, - he obviously not going to be much use in the Euros campaign. Any potential caps he could get off the bench in September, or in friendlies in November, should go to younger players instead.
