The same Gareth McAuley who said it was a conspiracy the 6 counties ended up in a group with Holland and Germany instead of us . Not the fizziest can in the fridge. £1.3m reported fee for Kouassi. Less than half our outlay. Linked with Hickey from Hearts. Looked OK on the couple of occasions I saw him. Age is on his side. Surely couldnt be any worse than the current options at left back. If he is available at low cost, Im sure Celtic wouldnt want another Andy Robertson situation unfolding. Also talk of Ajer swap for Benkovic plus cash. I didnt get the fuss with Benkovic in his first spell plus hes injury prone. Ajer does have his bomb scare moments but still think there is a good player there. His goal at Pittodrie was a big moment in the season.

Does this man not realise that all that extra salt merely adds to the overall flavour? Poor chap is probably having regular night terrors about the potential for 10 in a row.

I saw those rumours and was sceptical. Hickey has been shot down by many due to recent performances, but he is still a kid and wouldn't cost a fortune. It's an obvious gamble.
For all the times Ajer switches off, I still think there's a proper defender there. Maybe he needs to move on though. Benkovic would be absolutely brilliant as a replacement, bar the obvious injury concerns. I think he is second to Van Dijk in defenders for Celtic over the past while. It's a much bigger gamble, certainly.

Very poor from McAuley , who has resorted to wearisome sectarian dog whistles of this ilk seemingly as a tactic to court controversy as a pundit and sell newspapers. Comes shortly after his attacks on James McClean. He played little for Rangers, joining them in his late thirties when he was effectively finished, and retired a year later having won precisely nothing himself. Overwhelming odour of sour grapes and bitter politics.

I think we are crying out for an experienced centre half to keep Ajer/Jullien right. Some of their positioning leaves a lot to be desired. League Cup final, Morelos got in on goal at will. Further rumour now of Ntcham to Southampton as part of swap deal with Forster and/or Elynoussi. Ntcham has flourished in the second half of the season, although if there is genuine interest from England Id say he will look to go.

Yeah, the balance between them isn't great. Both can get caught out of position. I would still like a more old school defender as an option, even if he is much older. Just an option that could have made the League Cup final more composed, for example.
Swapping Ntcham is obvious for Celtic there, if not for Southampton. When he turns up he is excellent and was more consistent last season, but he isn't first choice and you always feel he wanted to leave.

Ntcham is such s frustrating player he can be quality on occasions then other games he seems to approach the match like it's s Sunday afternoon stroll. Far too inconsistent.

Veron Parkes is interested in a move to Celtic after turning down a professional deal at West Ham, The Athletic understands, with the striker impressed by how the Scottish Premiership champions have developed young players.
Parkes, 18, was offered an initial two-year professional contract but he believes he has a better chance of playing first-team football elsewhere. His scholarship deal concludes at the end of June and West Ham have been unable to secure a deal, according to sources close to the player. The striker believes there is a realistic pathway into the first team at Celtic, citing Jeremie Frimpong’s breakthrough season at Celtic Park after he arrived from Manchester City on a four-year deal on last summer’s transfer deadline day. The Athletic understands that the precedent set by Frimpong, who was offered an opportunity in the starting XI against Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup only weeks after signing at the age of 18, is a major incentive for Parkes. Equally important was how Frimpong was rewarded when he took his opportunities, having been named man of the match against Partick and for his league debut, a 6-0 home win over Ross County in October. He has since become a trusted mainstay in the first team, and now has a League Cup winners’ medal as well as a Premiership winners’ medal. Before the season was curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, he racked up three assists and two goals in 19 appearances for Celtic from right-back. Frimpong’s signing was the highlight of a new recruitment strategy spearheaded by Celtic’s new head of football operations Nick Hammond, formerly of West Brom and Reading. Along with Jonathan Afolabi who arrived from Southampton and Lee O’Connor who arrived from Manchester United, Frimpong fits a pattern of highly rated teenagers from English academies who outgrew youth football and felt frustrated by the lack of first-team pathways outlined to them by their clubs. They were players available for a nominal fee or even free, representing an opportunity for Celtic to not only develop them into first-team players but eventually make a profit on. Parkes matches this profile and clearly Celtic has a growing reputation as an environment conducive to developing and trusting players looking to kickstart their senior careers. Although other clubs in England are interested in signing Parkes, his camp would prefer a move abroad. Heerenveen, Fortuna Sittard, New York Red Bulls and an unnamed Spanish club have all been credited with an interest. Those close to Parkes appreciate what West Ham have done for him but feel a move to another English club is unlikely to improve his chances of breaking into top-tier first-team football. Before the curtailment of fixtures in the under-18 and under-23 competitions, Parkes played 19 games, provided six assists and scored 13 goals. The two under-23 games in which he featured were against Manchester United and Sunderland. The striker occasionally trained with the first team at Rush Green and he finished the season as the top scorer for Kevin Keen’s under-18s and the fifth-highest scorer in the Under-18 Premier League with 11 goals. Parkes joined West Ham from Crystal Palace in December 2017 at the age of 16 and in his two and a half year spell he has amassed 25 goals in 48 youth-team appearances. Parkes is versatile and can operate anywhere across the forward line. His standout moments this season were a hat-trick against Swansea and a penalty against Charlton Athletic in the FA Youth Cup. Last term, Parkes scored five goals in his opening four under-18 league appearances. He was then promoted to the under-23s and continued his goalscoring form, having scored against Everton and Swansea City. Parkes’ main strengths are his pace and ability to provide assists. Thanks to his mixed background, he is also eligible to play for England, Scotland, Japan, Spain and Jamaica. Scouts from Scotland were present at some of his games this season. |

JFK on Duff leaving
“Me and Neil have spoken about things although no decision has been made yet,” said John Kennedy. “We’ve looked at a number of options. There are guys within the club who could fit the bill while we’ve also got a lot of connections outwith those who also fit the bill. “It’s not a necessity to have a Celtic background. But probably an understanding of the club and the job will help. It makes sure you’re not caught by surprise coming in. We won’t rush into an appointment. “Damien was a great addition to the coaching team. He’s a terrific guy and with a great mentality. I don’t think it’s been out yet, but he has a young family who had to move back to Ireland. They didn’t settle. “Damien was fully committed to Celtic, spent so much time in his role. But, ultimately, he had a young family who needed his support back home and he had to make a very tough decision. He was gutted. “But it wasn’t the FAI taking him back to Ireland, it was his family. Secondary to that, the FAI job became available. It was disappointing to lose him. But we understood. We’ll look to confirm his replacement in the coming weeks.” Edited by tonyjaa - 26 May 2020 at 10:37pm |
