I think a lot of people are forgetting how poor and frustrating mcgeady has been over the years with us. It definitely a step backwards for me if he is in the squad especially at his age, same with arter he has little to no game time for the past few months.

Looking at the progression of the next generation I don't think we have much choice but to take a step back at the moment, other than one or two of them they're nowhere near ready to step in. Hopefully they will be for Euro 2024 qualification but who knows.
Right now I think we just need to do as well as we can to protect our seeding for the next campaign. That means picking the best available squad regardless of age. If I was picking a 23 or 24 man squad tomorrow I would have McGeady in it. He's no world beater but he might be the difference between one point and three against Luxembourg.

He is still better than O'Dowda, and in better form. He should be in the squad

It is nothing like the Arter situation Mcgeady in great form creating chances which is something we do not have. The reason he wasn't playing before Christmas because Parkinson said he was a problem ask any Sunderland fan he and Johnson are the reason for Sunderland's improvement

If there is a clean bill of health (big if), with the likes of Brady, Connolly, Robinson, and McClean, we are actually covered in the wide positions.

We aren’t great on the right. Brady possibly is our best fit there, but the others don’t look happy on the right (although I don’t think we’ve played connolly there)

True, but this is in the mindset of the 4-3-3. Also, McGeady has played both sides, so really I think in a situation where there is a clean bill of health, I think Robinson fulfils the other right hand role, with McClean and Connolly out left. Like I have said before, I think this is the first time in a while that there is a legitimate debate about McGeady. However, given what we were to hope for with Kenny, if we started to look simply at form players, we would end up with a side that wouldn't have looked out of place in the latter days of the Trappatoni era. At that point, I would seriously doubt our ability to get results, or whether the Kenny project, as we understand it, has potential.

Yeah, I think with McGeady is that he is one of many past players who would have been better off in a more possession-based system (along with Darron Gibson, Stephen Ireland, Stephen Quinn, Wes, and I’m sure some others) but he is really up there at 35. I don’t how much tracking back he needs to do at Sunderland but we wouldn’t see him up and down the flank all game.
He is tearing up League one, though. Joint top assists and he didn’t start playing until December. Still, he was on fire at Preston too and that never turned into a hot streak for us

Would McGeady be ahead of Scully?
Both playing at the same level, both predominantly right-sided attackers.
Both playing in the 3rd tier... It's desperate times we are looking this far down for players to make a difference for us and not just fill out squads. |

Another assist for McGeady putting his hand for selection regardless of the level

10 assists and 2 goals in 16 league 1 appearances. Should be in the initial squad IMO.

Think it comes down to age profile when weighing him up against other lads but with the injuries we have if we were stuck for a goal in the last 20 there is worse we could do, especially if we are holding onto possession and need a player to go beat his man. We have very few players who can actually beat a man.

I’d have choked at the notion of Mcgeady in October but at this stage with the way he’s playing why not like. Could he be much worse then any player we have for the right hand side at the moment?

Well he's produced 10 assists and two goals in 16 games so that's just clearly not true.

He is coming to an end of his career but given our options he should be looked at by the manager in training. We have lots of younger players but how many of our players are getting goals and assists.
We’d all love if McGoldrick was still available and he is also near the end of his career. These are desperate times.

People are keen to dump all the old lads and put in youngsters just for the sake of it. Having players with experience could make all the difference to the younger lads making their mark, especially when our choices for the forwards are so inexperienced. We need people creating chances if we want lads like Connolly or Idah to score
