Shay hasn't retired. He only just landed on the Poznan turf 5 mins ago for his dive for Mandzukic's header

Just read some other quotes from this interview. To paraphrase him:
He was the best player on the pitch by a country mile in a pre season friendly against Barcelona once, Messi was playing. He read every pass of Messi's and intercepted it. Joan Laporta pushed everyone to the side, grabbed him and gave him a massive hug a day before the game and told everyone "this guys number one, this guys superman". Also he likes to hear of ex United players telling him of how Ferguson used to only be worried about him when facing City and would say we must man mark Ireland |

It's his blatant mental instability that has always made me feel uncomfortable with the amount of abuse sent in his direction, and articles that like that only reinforce it.

That will never happen of course. Its such a pity though. He really did waste the talent he was given. Who knows how his career would have panned out of that whole mess didnt happen with the Irish team. At that time he was looking like he had the unlimited potential..is it any coincidence that his career went downhill after that incident? Hes one player that i look back on with genuine regret we didnt get to see the best of him. Yes he may have money but when people look back in years to come what will they remember about stephen ireland? Nothing much except how he made up some daft story. Who will remember the talent he had or the talent he wasted. Apart from us.

For the reasons that Doherty has outlined.
He had such potential and was a quality player for us. In the very unlikely event of him returning there would also be a sense of closure and I don't necessarily want to use the word justice (as the damage was largely self inflicted) but for the way he was allegedly treated by Stephen Hunt at the time it would be nice to see him in green again.
