So that’s another 24 days holiday on top of their generous annual leave.

What dept ?
I'd say the lad you know is talking sh*t

What does works for the government mean ?

AFAIK uncertified sick leave in the PS is 7 days over a rolling 24 month period, a smidgen less than 24 days per year.

He works in the “civil and structural engineering services, Office of public works”

Now I don’t know if it’s standard across all departments but in his group they are fairly relaxed about it.

Definitely not standard, we get 7 days across two years, starting on your first sick day, needless to say, you keep them for when you're sick albeit a small few do abuse it.

I get two sick days paid without a doctors cert a year, haven't actually used one, haven't been sick in years and this is odd seems I sit next to a guy who coughs up his lungs all day

Usually, if you take a sick day the work will start to pile up. I only take a sick day if I'm nearing a  candlelight vigil or I want to take a few down with me.

I can work from home so when I’m sick I just do that.
I’ve probably had 2 proper sick days in the last 10 years.

My wife (who is a doctor) wouldn’t go in with a bad cold.

Well that is just good Doctoring. She shouldn't be putting already sick patients at risk.

I can work from home too but also as Houghton says I take a day off the work piles up as the person who covers for me also has his own job to do and half of the time doesn't get the time.

My company gives 10 paid sick days per year and lads abuse it. A doctors note is only required if you take 3 or more days in a row.

My missus on the other hand works for a company that offers unlimited paid time off so it makes no difference to her.

Studies have shown that people take less days off when there is no limit on it as not have a number on sheet makes people thick they are taking the piss if the take too many days off.

People I know back home have told me "i've got x weeks holiday a year and y number of paid sick days" as if they are extra holidays.
