long always came across as someone who had a great attitude whether he was playing or not.

I still prefer to start players who are playing regularly for their clubs, regardless of level, but I think long deserves his place in the squad anyway

Southampton are not paying Long sixty grand a week for nothing. He is a fantastic professional who keeps himself extremely fit and sets exemplary standards for the young players at the club. In the twilight of his career now but I'd still have him in the Ireland squad. Not a prolific goal scorer but the sort of forward defenders hate playing against, i.e. still has pace and chases everything down.

Not sure how accurate it is - but according to this website Long earns £15k p/w more than Ward-Prowse which seems a bit mental!

salarysport.com puts him on £58k so it seems right.   The have Ward Prowse on £100k too.  £60k is  average for the EPL but great money for Shane at 35.  McClean on£8k at Wigan.

I wouldnt say they're made up rather outdated.

Randolph is another there that has a handy number, £40k a week to train during the week and then sit at home with his feet up on the weekend.

Starts today against Brighton. They've left a few on the bench like Adam Armstrong and Armando Broja behind him.

23: FOUL! Long has been brilliant so far. He wins the ball back on the right and is bundled over by McArthur.

Another free-kick for Ward-Prowse, but it's headed away.

Can't help but feel he's been discarded too quickly.
