Could be a wake up call for Long.
Not getting his game at club level, who'd have thought he wouldn't be in the top 4 strikers for Ireland. Needs a move and a fresh start. He's still a lot to offer. |

Yes an absolute idiot for not calling up a lad whose possibly fifth choice at club level, can't get a spot on the bench at club level and only gets a short run out in the cup because of injuries while a teenager with our 21s starts and scores. Same teenager whose also taken his place in the match day squads.

We'll just need to get someone else to not score the goals

He has 17 goals for us, a hell of a lot more than anyone else in the squad.

Obviously Long isn't prolific, but he does tend to be a bit of a nuisance and can create space for others. To be honest that is more of an offering than we've seen from either Hogan or Maguire to date.
He finished out the tail end of last season quite strongly and, although it seems likely he's not in the current Southampton manager's long term plans, it's a bit early in the season to be jettisoning him from the squad entirely. But then again McCarthy has more or less condemned himself to making this call given his soundbites lately about the importance of being selected by your club manager first. Shaqiri hasn't played a minute for Liverpool yet this season but you can be sure he'll make the Swiss squad - and probably their starting eleven too.

There is 100% a place for Long. He has 17 goals for us, our 4 chosen strikers have 0. Even if it is from the bench we need someone who can score at this level. I can’t see us getting a result next week - if we draw or lose I think our campaign is over. But anything can happen. Looking forward to it anyway.

We will certainly going for a draw which is frustrating however! Georgia may have a big say in the group yet, hopefully starting on sunday!

I’ve a split opinion on this one
Long in form is an asset no doubt, but no one should take their place in the squad as a given Could be a kick up the backside for him

If we are looking for inspiration from the likes of Mcguire , Hogan and even Browne I think we are going nowhere against the Swiss. Long or even Obafemi might cause them a problem

Genuine question. When did Shane long last affect a game as a sub?

About four years ago when he scored a few goals in qualification for the euros.

These are my thoughts too. It’s similar in nature to the mentality that McGeady should be picked for impact purposes. Long hasn’t scored for us in almost three years, and his goalscoring at club level has been the subject of much comment. Robinson and McGoldrick are starting at a functioning PL team so they are the natural selection. |

I'd have a place for him still. We don't really know if he is that much out of form, only that he hasn't really played. He was in ok form 3-4 months ago.
Granted it could be a kick in the arse, but I think if we are chasing a goal, I'd rather see Long on the touchline coming on than Hogan or Maguire

Realistically, we will have no impact sub up front. Judge is the only realistic option from the bench who could add something. Would have every faith in Byrne making an impact, but can't seem him being introduced unless we were 2 nil down or it was kitchen sink time.

How shyte is that? It's San Marino Level!
