I think you're believing what you want to believe. Generally, comments on Long have been exceptionally negative, particularly over the past two years. No one believes he's an outstanding striker, he certainly has a number of outstanding attributes though. Recognising those outstanding attributes is not the same as calling him an outstanding footballer.

I don’t believe I am. Read Bankaxed comments on him on bottom of the last page for example, suggesting that all Long is lacking to be a world class striker is finishing ability

He said "I'd love to see an alternate timeline where Long is a clinical finisher". Nowhere was the word "world class" mentioned? He'd certainly be an excellent player if he were a better finisher, in terms of "raw materials" he's a well endowed as any striker in the league. He wouldn't be world class on an Aguero level just because he scored more goals, but he would be very, very good. |

Spoke to a lad i work with from Southampton (season ticket holder) says Shane is well liked by the majority of fans, says OK he may not score goals but he is the one player the fans know is going to go out and run and fight for every ball regardless of the scoreline.

This line suggests to me that he thinks he'd be some kind of superstar - Jesus Christ ... Speed, strength, deceptively great in the air, hold up play, running the channels. He's not up to it technically more than anything IMO. That's the glaring weakness in his game. |

Saints web is a horrible site so wouldn't bother about this!Long has been very good since Hughes has come in. I'd be happy to keep him as e offers something different. I think in Austin and Gabbi we have two good strikers who will score goals...We just had the wrong man at the helm. Don't know if Hughes is the man long term but he deserves a shot next season

Yep this is true. Even when he was going through his most barren of barren spell fans continually chanted his name. We had enough players who looked like they didn't care, it was good to actually see someone put themselves about a bit

Searing pace, strength, stamina, he can jump higher than any other player I can think of in the league; add clinical finishing to that and you've got a top 6/8 striker. That is, I believe, the reasonable interpretation of what was being said. Of course he's not technically brilliant, and that would prevent him from being "world class"; but neither is he's technically awful, he can hold the ball up reasonably well and so on. Lukaku is a great example of how far physical attributes and good finishing can get you even if you lack technical brilliance. I'm not saying Long would be on that level, but he'd certainly be an extremely effective player.

There was a period in the lead up to the Euro's where he could do no wrong. Seen a clip on facebook yesterday where he controls a ball over his shoulder, turns inside the defenders and finishes with his left from 18 yards, fantastic goal. Has been badly lacking confidence for a while now, which has been plainly obvious and his lack of finishing ability has been there for everyone to see.
You can guarantee that Southampton will not be relying on him for goals next season and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him shipped out in the summer.

I think he's technically very poor and with very little game intelligence.
However, I remember he scored 2 goals against Villa (I think, for West Brom) that I'd describe as world class, he does have the tendency to score the odd cracker alright. England and Germany for example, however goals itself are quite rare. |

Those goals that Monday night about 7 years ago sprung to mind earlier. He hasn't looked that kind of player in many years though. |

If Long was in the championship, how many goals would he average a season?
I reckon about 15. He just isint a natural finisher. Still has a lot to offer a team but not goals.

That is, in short, rubbish. If you actually watched him properly, you'd see his movement is quite good (he made a brilliant run against Swansea actually around the 80th minute, initiating the move and then slicing theough their defence). Unfortunately, his finishing means he doesn't capitalise on the chances he creates. I think there's a lot of conflation going here, the fact he is not a great finisher doesn't mean he's useless overall; and the he's technically average doesn't mean he has no game intelligence, he very much does.

Far from a top class forward but I still think he is our best option upfront, crying shame he is so bad at finishing because the rest of his game is good enough for our level and he really does run himself into the ground every game. Would he possibly be an option for the right wing in a similar role to what Walters has played for us over the years? Not sure if he has played out there for Southampton.

scored today against diijon in a friendly. I see he played the first half. Austin came on afer half time. Hopefully he will get a few goals early in the season and get his confidence back. Need to get him scoring again.
