Barton was one of those players eligible for Ireland but like Mark Noble and a number of others he was upfront about not being interested. He ended up with one England cap, Noble with none. Fair play to Whelan still being offered contracts at the age of 38. Whatever your opinion of his ability, you have to admit the guy is a terrific professional.

Barton says Glenn was the better player when they were at City together. Not sure about that!
Any accolade from Barton should be welcomed.šŸ˜©

Probably would've earned more caps if he didn't alienate senior players like Frank Lampard. Standards only started slipping a ways into his spell at QPR when he was well into his thirties.

He's a headbanger but let's give him some credit here.

Whelan was a good PL pro and, obviously, had the better international career by virtue of getting capped regularly by a weaker nation but I don't think he was as good as Barton.

Far more limited in his purview. Not nearly as good technically. Less of a headcase, though.

Whelan stayed in the Stoke team for nearly a decade but every time they tried to replace him (Palacios, Imbula), the other options turned out to be absolutely sh*te more than Whelan being really good.

Also, and other people's mileage will vary on this, extremely frustrating player for Ireland.

What has any that got to do with Barton saying Whelan was better than him in the Man City youth team?

Mainly said poster having severe difficulty taking people at their word.

What are you babbling about now? The quoted comment was in response to someone saying that Whelan was better than Barton throughout his career.

IDK what I've done to offend you, mate, but get over it. Life is too short to carry insane grudges like this.

If anything this highlights how Whelan was a better player, he took a championship team to a few top ten finishes in the premiership while Barton took two "top ten teams" to mainly bottom half finishes. Barton was a thug on and off the pitch, there was nothing more to him as a player. 3 or 4 decent-ish seasons at City and the rest of his career wasn't up to much

Bit of truth in that sadly, having Cullen replace him in the team is a massive step up in my opinion. Cullen is probably better on and off the ball.

Whelan was always the best option at the time though.

Even more sadly, it's totally untrue and a ridiculous comment. I've no problem with the Cullen opinion, but while the moronic sledging of Whelan by the village idiot is unsurprising, its support by others is pathetic.

Apologies Mr.brick, didn't mean to upset anyone, i appreciate some people rated whelan very highly.

I've always thought he was the best option for ireland at the time.

Back on the field in League 1 as a sub for Bristol Rovers - he's a player/coach now but it looks like that will involve a reasonable amount of playing time. No stopping him.
