When you think Delaney knifed him for Stan. (Apparently a world class replacement)

Too conservative and defensive for my liking. When it came to the crunch games the team never gave a performance. I mean there's an argument he deserved another campaign but for me I didn't see signs things were improving or we were going places. There just seemed to be a lack of joy in the the team nor a joy in watching them. I remember we were hammered away is Basel in 2004 int he 2nd half and he said after the game we were too cavalier. Nonsense. He was also prickly in interviews and with the press and criticism didnt just bounce off him. I'd also make the case he had Duff, Keane, Dunne and Give and John O'Shea all at their peaks and never got anything out of them. Keane scored comparatively little under Kerr, Duff was fairly poor apart from Russia. It wasn't until Trap came in that we got anything out of these players.

what ever about the home game and being 2-0 up I seem to recall we took an early lead in Israel ( Clinton ? ) then proceeded to do fuk all for the next 85 minutes , Given saved a penalty and Israel equalised in the last few minutes which was the least they deserved. An awful performance football wise and as a statement of intent

First point - this is totally irrelevant really but Cunningham and OBrien had to be two of the most boring players to ever play at the heart of our defence. I know we see a good bit Kenny now and there is a bit to him but back then..... and O'Brien, yawn. Also, JOS in my memory was poor for Ireland until Trap came in.

The Cyprus Away performance was his worst, though substantially better than our subsequent Cypriot adventure! I remember his last game against Switzerland H we had to win to get a PO and he took off Robbie and possibly Duff? with a lot of time still to play, totally lost the plot. I think he has some reason to fee aggrieved about the sacking but the team definely regressed under his stewardship - 2002-2008 6 massively wasted years Did any English clubs ever come in for him? He could have been a really good Football League level manager Edited by avfc - 03 Dec 2020 at 10:05am |

Just to add, his friendly record was unreal.
Holland 2004 was one of our best ever performances - Robbie gave an exhibition. On paper, our 2004 squad was much better than Greece.

I was a huge fan of Kerr and was delighted when he got the job. I still love his passion and attitude for the game. It was a disgrace the way JD shafted him. Whatever about staying on in the senior job, to lose him to Irish football was criminal. But I can't understand how, for someone who talks so passionately about playing positive, progressive football, he set up his Ireland teams so conservatively. It was grim at times (Switzerland twice, Cyprus) and the Israel games were just baffling. We really weren't far away.

Gary Doherty was his go to guy. Whatever about his set up (I agree with you) his man failing was to not get the best out of his squad, they didn't look motivated under him and I see certain early parallels in that regard with the current manger.

A game we had to win, against a team who only needed a draw, and barely left their own half for 90 minutes, but he stuck rigidly to 4-4-2 for the entire game. Keane and Morrison were substituted for Elliot and Doherty - in a home game where Ireland needed to score, he took off Robbie Keane - and left four at the back. A draw was as bad as a loss, so why not go 3-4-3 for the last 15 minutes? We finished fourth, Kerr lost his job a month later and nobody was surprised. As close to a "golden generation" as we ever had, and the innate conservatism in his approach to the game cost us at least a play off place. |

I find it hard to believe he was in Genoa ( I think that's the game he alluded to or if not it was the Dutch game in Palermo) where he says he was happy we got through and saw some FAI officials crying and was bemused and felt sorry for them, as he felt that level of elation every week at Pats Sure you did Brian. |

That was cringey. The purists just hate the fact that hoofball got us to 6th in the World rankings. |

I'm what you could call a purist and I loved a lot of our play under Jack. Granted I was only a kid but there was a massive difference in approach between what we got 1986-1994 (the team was over the line from that point) and the hoofball that came years after. For a start, we pressed high and committed bodies forward. Fair enough, no chances were taken at the back and the ball went from full backs to front men early but there was a clear understanding of the plan. The midfield runners worked their socks off picking up loose ball in the opposition half. There was an excitement in the tempo of our performances particularly against "bigger" teams. That's totally at odds with later managers who sat in against stronger nations and tried to "not concede and maybe nick one from a set piece". Boring as f**k |

I don't get how people think Kerr was "shafted"
Like, there was one decision to be made at the end of the 2005 qualifiers - keep him or sack him That decision seemed fairly straightforward to me And obviously if you sack him from the senior job, he's not going to be working for the FAI anymore
