There isn't a massive difference for Ireland, because we were never, ever going to beat one of the top two, but there is a massive difference for Mick as he gets to keep a semblance of reputation by saying how close we were. In reality we were miles off, no matter what we say.

Switzerland were the best team in the group by a distance. Denmark getting four points off of them was pure thievery. However we were not miles off of Denmark. In all the games we've played against them recently, only O'Neill's bizarre half-time show saw them win against us. They are certainly no great shakes. Mick gets to keep his reputation because we went from being an unrecognisable Irish team back to being what we expect from Ireland. After our victory in Vienna the team went on a serious slide. O'Neill's last 20 games .........P....W....D....L....F....A ........20....4....8....8...14...23 McCarthy's Record .........P....W....D....L....F....A .........10....5....4....1....13....7 Overall that's a good job from Mick.

That's right. But of the other games only Switzerland away and Georgia away were poor performances. The rest were decent to good. Previously we had been getting below par performances as standard.

The only game where they really needed to beat us, they did. They needed a draw in Dublin and comfortably got it. Complacency cost them at home. The NL games were seen as good results for them. In fact, the only result they would be disappointed with is the 1-1 in Copenhagen and that is the only result we were happy with; bar maybe the scoreless dead rubber.

They certainly should've won both games not to mention the two Nations League fixtures. We were lucky to get 4 draws in all those games.

We were in a three average team shootout for qualification, and we finished third. It's not a good campaign, it's not a bad campaign. It's mediocrity, and it wasn't good enough. Unlike every other group, those who finished above us have no hope of winning the competition.

It wasn't unlikely, we were never ever going to win a match against the Swiss or Danes in the group. Our intention was to play non football and pray that some mathematical freak results elsewhere would see us automatically qualify. That was the entire plan, non football of the most toxic level. Away to the Danes we should have been battered. We were battered against the Swiss away in one of the most comical managerial displays ever seen (a display making MON mental collapse against the Danes at Lansdowne in the World Cup playoff look like a Rinus Michels masterclass). At home to the Swiss, we were playing a flat back 10 at times for the first 45 minutes. We got away with only being 1 down until the last 10 mins and we rescued a draw with a late flurry. At home to the Danes was nothing short of appalling, just f*cking poisonous. We had no intent on trying to win the game from the off, the plan was to play for a 0-0 until 75 to 80 mins where we could throw a few tall lads up front and hope to scramble a win. As it turned out, the Danes went ahead and knew no matter how badly they played. we had no possible way of scoring 2 goals. Make no bones about it btw, the Danes did play about as badly as they ever could on that night at Lansdowne and we offered sweet f.airy all even after getting the late equaliser. The campaign was nothing short of rotten. I'm guessing in the end that we have just witnessed that campaign from the most expensively assembled Irish management team in history. That utter sh*te is what we got for millions upon millions, and will be paying off for years to come at the detriment of the growth of football in this country. So you can take your hyperbole comment and basically suck my ballbag. The biggest load of tripe and hyperbole consistently spouted on here in recent times is the Kenny playing like Brazil line, just poison. I suppose we had to move on from the previous years tripe that our Mick was a great appointment and would have Ireland back playing attacking football.

Commentating on the Swansea game. Swansea score late and he encourages them to go for another in his commentary.
Da fuq. Come off it now Mick and this was said with his "manager hat on"

His commentary today was awful, very petty stuff, made a lot of comments belitling the new style of football, how we need to get balls in the box, how Ireland only score through crosses etc. In some ways, he was probably put in a bad position commentating on a team he had just left, sky shouldn't have had him there. Very glad we're rid of him if that's how he feels about football.

Why would you expect sky not to want the former manager to do the comm? Mick said Ireland can only score from crosses? Where did he get such a bizarre idea?

Wouldn't say it was awful but the commentary in general was very poor. The commentator seemed to go missing for large chunks and there were needless silences. All three missed Molumby's run. Danny and Mick having the polite chats was ok but didn't really lend anything to what was going on with the game. I don't think it is appropriate for Mick to be doing co-commentary so close to his own exit. Phil Babb speaking again about 'Duffer' also grated. The whole sky experience reminds me how lucky we are to have George Hamilton. I am even warming to Richie Sadlier.

I havent heard the commentary from today’s game, but i haven’t heard anything like that from McCarthy either during the Bulgaria game, in his media work, or when he was manager. In fact, I’ve only ever heard him say good stuff about Kenny.
Bit of wishful thinking sometimes when people imagine McCarthy as some kind of arsehole. Anybody who knows him will tell you he is a very decent and fair-minded man.

Basically he has got the hump because the commentators keep mentioning moving on the style of play and he is taking offence. I was very surprised he took up the offer to commentate on our games. I think he has done all of our games. Its a conflict of interest really. |

Yeah far too imbalanced. They should get somebody impartial to do the job. Somebody like Martin ONeill would be good.

The commentator mentioned something about their new style of play, and Mick came in with something along the lines of ‘it’s not too different to what they’re used to’.
And then saying Shane Long would have been in his squads if he wasn’t injured. Think he just wasn’t picked for a few.

I didn't hear him on Thursday but heard him today and dunno what people are getting their knickers in a twist over. He was complimentary about Kenny. Said Ireland needed to get the ball into wide positions and get crosses in a few times. Wow. People are desperate to be offended these days and the social media echo chambers they spend their online time in exaggerate that tenfold. And it's far from unusual to have an ex manager commentating on his former team's game.
