Not sure why they were considered favourites - as a tactic they were defensive and relying on the off the cuff stuff from their granted very talented forwards. Also their older experienced players are serial failures (at the Kerry / Brazil bar) at World Cup. And it’s generally a young squad.

Argentina - who won’t win it (*)- aside, it’s been a poor WC for South America starting with Peru loosing to the Aussies in the playoff qualifiers. Maybe their standard of qualification isn’t all that.
