FA Cup is awful for foreign fans, but a lot of the English love it. Obviously every year isn't gonna be a classic, but every little town in England has its local team that loves the idea of every team has a day out.

Arsenal vs utd on a Friday night might just make me rekindle my like of the fa cup. Think both these sides will put out strong teams as both will be desperate for a trophy.
Looking back the the highlights of the 99 semi final replay, even as a Liverpool fan, that was when the FA cup was magic.

Less then a year later Utd pull out of the cup to play in Brazil and apparently that was the end of clubs taking an interest in the cup.

Ironically at the FA's insistence because they were bidding for the WC at the time

I know this has probably been discussed to death at some point on here but could Utd’s game not have been put back 2 weeks or something? Or give them a bye into the next round? Was the option play the reserves or don’t play at all?

There was no option to play the reserves IIRC. Easiest solution was to put the game back 2 weeks and not have a replay if it ended in a draw

Only one team in the top 2 divisions saw an increase attendance compared to the previous home fixtures.
Sheffield utd had 19k less. Cardiff had 17k less. Even Championship clubs were making 7/8 changes on average. |

Such a downer realising its a cup weekend. Might as well be no football on.

Think the FA Cup gets a lot of unfair hate. It's great to see lower league teams go on cup runs and beat higher ranked teams, even if their only playing reserve teams. It's also the best chance for about 12 of the EPL teams to win a trophy for the foreseeable future. Think the only negatives about it are the stupid decision to play semi finals at Wembley and the overly cheesy advertising by BT and the Beeb about the romance of the Cup

The only negatives are nobody cares. No matter what division you are in or where you are in the league, every team will make wholesale changes today. Away crowds, like WBA at the Essex Olympics, will be decent to make a day of it with little care for the result, but home crowds will be well down.

Used to be a great competition. Iconic old Wembley as well. Now its an embarrassment and a nuisance. Managers resting all their best players. 'Giantkillings' aren't worth much anymore when the team you beat don't even want to be in the competition. Early -mid 90's it died. Pity. the UEFA cup, World Cup, Cup-Winners Cup, Euro were all good back then. Football is dying tbh

The old Wembley was only "iconic" because of its Novelty Value (most clubs hardly ever played there in the old days) and because at 100k capacity, it was so much bigger than virtually every other football stadium in England, so far more tourists, occasionals and glory-hunters got a chance for a big day out. Also a characteristically British nostalgia for things merely because they are very old, even when they serve no useful purpose eg red telephone boxes. Or the (late) Queen Mother. As someone who has been to Wembley many times since the 1981 FAC Final, both old stadium and new, I can tell you that by the time it closed in 2000, at over three quarters of a century old, it was long past its sell-by date. (Which is not to say that the new version is all it should be, or even close, but that's a debate for another day.)
