From reading the article it says most valuable. Surely that is quite different from richest?

Yes, that is indeed the headline. But read the first line of the article.
Its sounds perfectly reasonable that United are the worlds most valuable club - stadium, players, assets , market etc but define richest ? Who has the most money?
Surely a team like City or Chelsea who are been bankrolled by multi billionaires would be cash richer?
Just my take on it.

Link to the Forbes Article.

Looking at the debt/value ratio for the top 20, almost all German French, and Italian Clubs have less then 10% debt/value ratio, while the top 3 in England (Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal) have ~45% ratios Edited by totti - 22 Apr 2010 at 7:21am |

Its all about the club being financially self sufficient Peter Kenyon said in 2005 that chelsea would be financially self sufficient by 2010- no wonder they moved him on If abrahmovich or sheikh mansour walked away city and chelsea could be in big trouble whereas the clubs at the top of this list are financially self sufficient It isnt an individuals rich list its the clubs rich list- 2 totally different things |

Getting away from the fact that Man Utd are the worlds best everything ever!
Looking at the Debt/value ratios on this list, English teams could be doing a whole lot better! http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/34/soccer-10_Soccer-Team-Valuations_DOV.html Would be handy if they did this for all the teams Europe so that you can see which clubs are in trouble financially! Good to see newcastle getting back on track, lets hope the Premiership doesn't ruin them again! |

Interesting that Newcastle are still on that list despite being relegated last year.

This would kind of remind me of the fact that the likes of Anglo irish bank was ' worth' , I don't know, a few hundred billion not so long ago. There are an awful lot of people with their heads in the sand over this one, fans, directors, chairmen, the English FA, Sky sports to name but a few.
Portsmouth cant be the end of this if there is to be any kind of rational analysis on it. Man U top this list, perenially sucessful, take in more money than any other club, have a bigger worldwide reach than probably any other club, so how the f**k are they in debt to the tune of £ 800 mill STG ?.
Easy answer ' The Glazers' but this isn't really the issue, the issue becomes who gave them this borrowed money and how they intend to get it back. Ronaldo can only be sold the once, the debt does not go away and still has to be repaid. How exactly do you do that if you need to spend further cash in order to keep the squad at the top in order to win more stuff and take in more money ?
Football is cyclical, Utd are not exactly going to disappear overnight, but there will come a time they won't win as much as they used to, the debt wont go anywhere in the meantime. This business model is fundamentally flawed (not just Utd, football in general) and can only end in failure in the long run. It is doing what the likes of Leeds, Portsmouth, Cardiff and even Shelbourne did, all on a lesser scale than Man U or Liverpool, you would have to question where it will end.
