Iran will qualify with a win today

Iran are in, 2-0 with a second in the 88th minute to seal it. Big crowd in at the Azadi, going bananas.

Highlights here, with f**king awful vuvuzelas, but bonus Carlos Quieroz coverage.

Lovely second to seal it.

The bigger story of that group is the unexpected rise of Syria, despite the obvious problems the team are facing.

Iran and S Korea are meant to be running away with that group but Syria drew with Iran, Korea and China putting them well in contention after the 1st round of games.

Their next game against Qatar is probably the biggest game in the country's history, with Korea having to play Iran and 3rd placed Uzbekistan and Uzbekistan playing China and then Korea, Syria will never ever get a better chance of qualifying for a WC in their entire history.

They're battling Uzbekistan for the playoff spot. Uzbekistan have a much easier run in. If they do overcome that they'll likely have Japan in the playoff anyway. Can't see them getting through all that.

Interesting to look around the world to see what first timers are in the mix though.
  • As Coyne mentioned, in Asia we've Uzbekistan and Syria in the mix for a playoff (but would have to play Australia/Japan so unlikely).
  • In Africa we've Burkino Faso and DR Congo (were there in '74 as Zaire).
  • In the Americas Panama are in pole position for the playoff with an Asian team (Australia/Japan I reckon so unlikely).
  • In Oceania, Solomon Islands will playoff with New Zealand but the winner will play a South American team so unlikely.
  • In Europe, Montenegro and Iceland are the only ones looking like they may make it.
Iceland, Montenegro, Burkino Faso and Dr Congo looking like the only debutants

Burkino Faso probably overdue a WC appearance at this stage - they've had a few decent runs in the ACON over the last couple of decades.

Syria making it would be absolutely incredible.

Not really bar 2013 and 2017 were they were Runners up and 3rd they haven't got out of the group and have finished as the 15th out of the 16 teams on 4 of those.

They have a tough group containing Senegal and South Africa which they have to play away also Senegal at home.

I wouldn't be predicting anything, I don't even dare to personally it's that close! LOL
Korea have been hopeless, should be well out of sight but embarrassing losses to China and Qatar is why they're in this situation!

Group B is amazingly tight too. Japan 1 point ahead of Saudi Arabia and Australia, and their last 2 games is against..... Saudi Arabia and Australia, goal difference can't be relied on for Japan either!

Whatever about the debate over Montenegro, seeing as they have been represented by 2 different teams at a finals, DR Congo will definitely not be considered debutants. It is the same country as '74, just Mobutu had decided to change the name. He changed his own name too and he was still the same lunatic! If Burkino Faso had managed to qualify when the state was named Upper Volta it would be the same.

Nice piece on the Syria team on the BBC, only about 20 minutes or so but worth a look.

This time next year we will nearly be halfway through the World Cup, it'll be a killer if we are not there, such a great opportunity to top the group even after drawing at home to Wales and Austria.
Kickoff times Irish time 12:00pm 3:00pm 6:00pm (maybe an hour diff +- for some games).
3 or 4 matches a day for the first 2 weeks....heaven.

Best Serbia at home....we'll top the group
Or,
Austria beat Serbia at home....we'll top the group
