Blatter: England are 'bad losers'

Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:46

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has described England as 'bad losers' over the fall-out from the failed 2018 World Cup bid.

England secured just two of the 22 FIFA members' votes and were knocked out in the first round while Russia went on to triumph.

Bid leaders later claimed members had broken their promises to give them their backing during the ballot, but Blatter insists that is not the case.

'To be honest, I was surprised by all the English complaining after the defeat. England, of all people, the motherland of fairplay ideas,' Blatter told Swiss magazine Weltwoche in an interview which will be published in full tomorrow.

'Now some of them are showing themselves to be bad losers.

'You can't come afterwards and say so-and-so promised to vote for England. The results are known. The outcome came out clearly.'

+1

Lucas Neill went up in my estimation from the effort he put into their bid

He looked properly upset when interviewed after they lost it- looked like he was about to cry

Hop australia get one soon- would be a great place to hold a world cup- possibly not enough scope for brown envelopes though
It took City 44 years to win the league and 10 months to lose it

1.3 billion people and growing. We'll all hear the ka-ching coming from FIFA HQ if they bid for it Angry

Following the announcement I looked at the two winning bids and I reckon both will put on great World Cups. The Qatar WC in particular is going to be incredible with the amount of moula the Arabs will spend and will provide employment to several thousand paddy construction workers e.g. QS's like me Wink

Australia would have been a good World Cup too....maybe the next time they bid it will be a cleaner FIFA...somehow I don't think so Dead

USA will get it next time or Oz.

China are not bidding for it because they'll want to create a team capable of winning it first so they can win it in their country. They probably have young kids right now at the age of 6 getting specialist training to turn them into footballing machines. So 2034 will be China to host and win the world cup! You've heard it here first.

Didn't they get the most medals in the olympics when they hosted it?

They got the most golds by 15. Which means you top the table. USA got 10 more medals overall.

Oz are seriously considering not going for it again as they spent 45 million on tax payers money on their campaign and feel extremely hard done by in which the way the votes went and who could blame them. I've also read England wont be going for it for a long time after the way FIFA carried on.

FIFA are an absolute disgrace. How they can keep on getting away with such corruption is beyond me. The likes of the English, Ozzies and most other FA's around the world should stand up to this shower and demand things/ personnel change.

I wouldnt really class Qatar as being part of Asia, more middle east.

You could be right with China but I would of thought individuals are a bit different to team games especially given practically every country in the world plays football.

Australia can feel hard done by but England. ?... sour grapes they lost because their bribes were sh1te compared to Russia's they lost 'fair and square'

It's funny you say that. Remember the handbags they bought the Fifa exco wives. They were up to their own dirty tricks but are not saying anything about that now...it's all FIFA this and FIFA that with them. They should take a good hard long look at their own behaviour Embarrassed

The thing that was wrong was FIFA should have come out and say what type of bid they are looking for. Then they should eliminate bids early. Korea and Japan for example hadn't really a hope as it had only been there 20 years earlier so FIFA should have advised them out.
Oz can feel hard done by only getting one vote though

But I guess it's now not only to do with the country hosting it but mainly to do with the demographics.
The South African World Cup was for all African people. Russia is for all Soviets/Eastern Europeans. Qatar is for all of the middle east. Brazil got it by default so they are an exception to my point.  But that's why in future China will defo win when they bid for it. Americans and Oz also in with a shout too. Can see the next three world cups after Qatar being shared out between them three

Blatter puts his foot in it again

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has landed himself in hot water for joking that homosexuals should keep themselves in the closet during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

-%200

Blatter, whose organisation has been widely criticised for Qatar’s landslide win earlier in December, was responding to comments about the tiny Gulf state’s punishment for homosexual activity, which includes up to five years in prison.

"I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities," Blatter said in Johannesburg at the launch of a post-2010 World Cup legacy project, before adding that he expected attitudes in Qatar to soften over the next decade.

"I'm sure when the World Cup will be in Qatar there will be no problems. You see in the Middle East the opening of this culture, it's another culture because it's another religion, but in football we have no boundaries.

"We open everything to everybody and I think there shall not be any discrimination against any human beings be it on this side or that side, be it left, right or whatever.

"If (gay people) want to watch a match somewhere in Qatar 2022, I'm sure they will be admitted to such matches."

Gay activists and sportspeople were not impressed by Blatter’s comments, with John Amaechi - a British former NBA star who is now a prominent spokesman for gay rights - publicly condemning the FIFA president on his website.

"The statements and the position adopted by Sepp Blatter and FIFA regarding LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual) fans who would pay the enormous ticket and travel prices to attend the World Cup in 2022 should have been wholly unacceptable a decade ago," said Amaechi.

"Instead, with little more than an afterthought, FIFA has endorsed the marginalisation of LGBT people around the world.

"Anything less than a full reversal of his position is unacceptable and if the (English) FA and football and sporting associations around the world fail to acknowledge this insult, they too will be complicit.

"If sport cannot serve to change society, even temporarily during the duration of an event like the World Cup that invites the world to participate, then it is little more than grown men chasing a ball and we should treat it as such."

The Gay Football Supporters Network called for a boycott of the finals when Qatar was announced as host.

Uefa president Michel Platini has called for the 2022 World Cup to be played across the whole of the Gulf.

Qatar won the right to host the 2022 tournament but the decision has not been without controversy with Fifa boss Sepp Blatter keen to hold it in winter.

Neither proposal was suggested during the bidding process and Qatar have always maintained the tournament will only be held in the tiny Arab country.

"I hope it will be a World Cup of the Gulf," said Platini on Wednesday.
