I joined toast master about 8 years ago and entered a humorous speech competition about how the rise of the irish economy was directly related to the rise of the Irish football team and this goal was the beginning of it all.

That was a great moment of hope - considering all the irish who worked in Germany serious recession that time in ireland.

For me, Gary Neville epitomises a legend. At united since he was 12 or 13, captained the side, 70+ caps for his country, never involved in controversy off the pitch, won every honour possible & has gone on record many many times over the years saying money never entered the equation with him. His first contract with united was something like £20 a week. An all round pro & seems like a genuine enough lad. Not a united fan but he's the only candidate I can think of. I believe the word legend is thrown aroun way too much when talking about footballers.

What Maradonna did at Napoli was the stuff of legend . He inspired that team to their first and only two scudettos. To better the Milan team of that time (Gullit/Van Basten/Rijkaard etc) was an incredible achievement.

Why? Irwin joined from Oldham in his twenties, didn't win every cup in the game nor was he club captain

It was more to do with the fact that he was at the club pretty much all his career, was a good player, a solid pro, and a player that was never involved in anything controversial on/off the field.

For me you need to have personality, you need to stand out from your team mates whether good or bad.

Is every great player a legend? No I don't think so.

I think Maradona is a good example of a player that is a legend.

I should have stated this earlier, I meant compared to the likes of Gerrard & other middle of the road players who are called 'legends' Neville is miles ahead of them.

Obviously Neville isn't on the same planet as special players like Maradonna, Maldini, Tony Cascarino etc. but in terms of the Premiership era. Neville has to be near enough top spot. Best right back the Premiership has ever seen

There is no way that Gary Neville is a legend and there is no way that Neville is anywhere near Gerrard footballing wise either.

Neville would be a utd legend but no way would he be a outright football legend. Keane and Cantona would be possibly the only 2 recent utd players who could be called that.
Also how people are calling Cas for football legend is beyond me

Ya I'd agree, Neville would be a club legend to its supporters like I suppose carra with us or tony Adams.
An outright footballing legend warrants more I think. Cascading? Surely people are taking the piss. He's hardly a nancy legend!
