Interestingly, Eoin Branigan, who been editor of the Irish Daily Star for years, is taking the top job at the Belfast Telegraph, be interesting to see how having a Dublin editor goes down up there.

The answer to Beckett’s question is that it’s always been a political reason for players to defect, in most cases, not a footballing one

"Players who were more senior, who wanted to make that decision to play for the Republic of Ireland, I had no issue with that. I just think that younger players, who are still trying to make their way in the game, should not be put in that position.

"It's not even about the FAI - ultimately Uefa and Fifa shouldn't allow it either. It's a shame for a player to be lost to international football, and we have seen some young players who have unfortunately experienced that. That can happen not only between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, that happened between us and England with Dominic Ball, for example," said the Stoke City boss.

That last point about providing a "pathway" in the game for youngsters is something which the IFA has spent a lot of time and money on ("Club NI"), under the direction of Michael himself, who was personally very committed to it.

Which would make it bad enough to lose players to another Association before their time in itself, but if that other Association doesn't provide the same pathway themselves, then it must be doubly galling:

And all that's before you get to the young player's best interests, which is/should be paramount.

First Fenian to edit the Telegraph, which under Gail Walker turned into a complete DUP propaganda sheet and lost a lot of its readership from moderate nationalists. Only happening because INM was bought over by Belgian company that is not going to put up with that sh*t anymore. Be interesting to see how this plays out in their sport coverage, which has always been ultra loyalist and totally unwilling to recognise that 99.9% of Fenians in the occupied six (apart from Frank Mitchell and Gerry 'Uncle Tom' Armstrong obviously) support Ireland.

If the Belly laugh has always been ultra Loyalist, why did those moderate Nationalists ever read it?

I rarely read it other than when visiting but that's more than enough to see that a large proportion of the sports coverage is EPL and Rory Mac's jaunts around Florida and California. One simply attracts more readers than extra GAA reports would. The other is a welcome meal ticket for local hacks. The new editor is unlikely to change either

Laughable really.

I think the North are kinda f**ked in the next few years. Can't think of any decent young players they have coming through and a lot of their better players are over 30.

While you look at our current u21 team a lot of good players who'll hopefully make the jump up

The article in the Belfast Telegraph is laughable. It suggests that the North have a great youth system and the Republic’s is in trouble because of the state of the FAI. If that’s the case, why is that the Republic’s U17 and U19 teams have been making regular appearances at the European Championship finals over the last few years, whereas the North is nowhere to be seen?

And then to suggest that everything is ok with Windsor Park. Well that’s just ridiculous. Players from nationalist backgrounds are unlikely to want to stand for GSTQ.

Well if memory serves me correctly Spain 9/10 times win that game comfortably and ifirc correctly a year later you were drawing 0-0 at home to the mighty Malta.

TBH I don't really follow the Northern Ireland u21 team that much so my original comments were more tongue and cheek.

You're right. Those nationalist players really seem to enjoy the honour of standing for GSTQ with their heads bowed looking like they'd want to be anywhere else than in Windsor Park!

The only arrogance is from the IFA which has continued to insist on playing an anthem that doesn't represent a significant portion of the population.

The BBC West Midland's sports news yesterday had Wolves beating Liverpool in an online tournament, possibly because Alexander Arnold was playing it without getting out of bed Smile
