Its disgusting that 30 million euro is being wasted on the security of this visit, when there are children in this country, OUR COUNTRY, who aren't being educated in proper class rooms or school buildings. Think of what 30 million euro could do for the all ready under-funded area of children with special needs, or to a Hospice such as the wonderful one that is in Harolds Cross (which I believe is 100% through fund raising and donations and doesn't get state funding)

Even closer to home, think of what 30 million euro could do for the domestic game in Ireland. Imagine how the image of the league of ireland would improve if 30 million was used to improve facilities at stadiums instead of being wasted on a visit that will last 4 days

There are 1000000000000's of better things that 30 million could be spent on, especially in this current climate. I'm actually not even blaming the Queen, or the Royal Family or anything like that..... This is another example of our government waisting the peoples hard earned money on stupid, retarded things like this that don't benefit the population who are struggling to live at the moment...... that is what has Connolly and Collins turning in their graves, not the fact that a The Queen is coming

30m isn't much when you consider 25% of Irish exports goes to the UK.

Oprah effect pays off for Australian tourism

Tourism Australia’s $1.5 million gamble to bring Oprah to Australia is starting to pay off, with initial data recording an increase in American travel bookings.

Speaking at the Australian Tourism Exchange this week, Tourism Australia’s managing director Andrew McEvoy said it was a little early to start popping champagne corks, but there are suggestions the ‘Oprah effect’ is working.

Online travel agency Orbitz reported a rise in flight and hotel bookings from Americans of nearly 10 percent and 13.6 percent respectively. Flight Centre/Liberty Travel has seen a 108 percent increase in flight bookings compared with the same period in 2010. US travel group Signature Travel recorded a 52 percent increase in Australian bookings.

Oprah Winfrey visited Australia to film four episodes of her top-rating show in December 2010. Consumer research recently conducted in America revealed that 61 percent of respondents aware of Oprah’s Australian shows had already investigated holidays in Australia. “About 74 percent of those who were aware of the shows agreed that Australia is worth travelling to,” McEvoy said.

“Since its announcement in September 2010, Oprah’s visit to Australia has generated more than 86,000 media articles across the world, with an estimated equivalent advertising value of $368 million,” he said.

that was fcking oprah going to australia, this will generate way more, like the fa vase compared to the fa cup

Has there been a cost benefit analysis done, the media coverage of the visit has been low key, how do they know they will get it back in vat receipts from more tourists. I would be sceptical that it pays for itself,

Maybe we can get Oprah over? Pay a million squid and find some long lost relative from leitrim and hey presto a lot more tourists will come. She'll be a lot less emotive than the queen anyway Tongue
