Saw this on a website for architects called Lyons.  They built a few stadia, says it was Lansdowne Road.  Obviously never happened.  A photo of Eircom park there also!

Demolition of existing stadium and construction of 65,000 seater stadium, consisting of 3 tiers of seating, 120 corporate boxes, restaurants, bars, retail units, changing facilities, museum, office and new railway station on 5.5 hectare city site

Lansdowne Road Stadium

Pretty similar to what became landsdowne. Difference was we needed to downsize the stadium because it could only be a certain height on the north side because of houses and lack of light

This is a full 4 sided stadium though, as opposed to the 3 sided thing we built!

FAI/IRFU built a stadium within the constraints applied to the planning permission. They had two options available. Rebuild landsdowne or build a stadium out in a field in West Co.Dublin. Now they could have built a 3 tier full stadium all the way around in the stadium in west Dublin, bringing the capacity to 65,000 (similar to emirates) but we still would have had way too much premium seats for a football stadium, the rugby crowd would have ensured that. We can't even fill 50,000 in football anyway!
I also love the fact the matches are basically in the heart of the city. Much better match day experience.

Sadly, this was by far the bigger reason for the shyte three sided yoke we have now. We could have turned it round 90 degrees and there would have been enough light for the houses on the north side (compared to the light they have at the minute) even with a full three tiered stadium.

Anyway, hopefully we'll be out of the Aviva in about twenty years. Dunno where to but once the debt is paid off, we should be able to make plenty of cash and use it towards a decent place.

 Not great, but decent.

It's alot of little things I dislike about it. The shallow angle of the terrace on the lower tier giving sh*te views, those white pipes under the roof look muck, the three sided stadium...

It is a long term disaster. I would love to see the big wigs in the FAI & IRFU to sit in the normal seats for a game to see the problems that are faced. Simple things like going to the toilet at HT/FT and getting food and drink are a no goer unless you miss parts of the match.

There are seats in the corners where the view is obstructed due to people going to and coming back from the toilets/getting food & drink. This wouldnt be a problem if the services were better.

If you go to the toilet directly after the match it could be a half an hour after full time until you exit the stadium.  This isnt just a problem in the cheap seats, its probably worse for the toilets in the premium section. I went to a Leinster match and the queue for the toilet post match was about 30 yards and it didnt die down for about 20 minutes.

When the stadium is paid for in 20 or so years, It would be time to knock this one down and move elsewhere. The whole process just delayed the inevitable. They will never be able to enjoy the fruits of this stadium before a new one is needed.

Saying that, I cant see international football being about in 20 years and rugby is finding itself in a power struggle too. There may no be a need for a new stadium.

It is a mess I feel.  If we couldn't put a proper stadium in the location we should have looked elsewhere.  I appreciate the dart and history but I feel long term a 60,000 stadium in a better location for the rest of the country would have beent he better choice.  Somewhere close to the M50 would make going to games a lot easier for the other 4 million people in the country!  Was Morton Stadium never considered as a venue?  It's in the city and has a large area to build a decent stadium, close to the M50 and M1.

Yeah what a mess, I can walk to the stadium from the city centre, I can get from Scruffy's to my seats in 10 minutes, a crappy hot dog took me 8 minutes.

I wish I was in a 65,000 seater stadium in the middle of nowhere, admiring all the empty rows of seats thinking 'Yup this is the business'

That was short term and they had buses to bring them back to the safety of the south side
