If i were to buy a ticket and validate it can I still tailgate through the barrieres and run past inspectors? it just would'nt feel the same complying fully with rail laws

The Viennese trust their passengers, there are no closed barriers or permanent inspectors on post, they only show up out of the blue from time to time on the trains and platforms and ask you for your ticket, otherwise it is a system of trust ...

Imagine, a fully integrated transport system where one ticket from any part of the city to another costs €2.10. Howth to Tallaght, dart and luas, €2.10. Blanchardstown to Sandyford, bus and luas, €2.10. Shankill to Swords, dart and bus, €2.10. What a system that would be. Unfortunately, here, each of those trips costs at least twice that and takes about 90 minutes.

48 hour ticket so, the fans match for anyone that's playing or watching is 30 mins from the city centre
Romario 2016: And the ticket mafia gets caught! Well, four years ago I had already told the government.

No, it does not cover the airport, this would be outside the city limits. There are three ways of public transport to get from the airport to the City Center:

- by express train to "Wien-Mitte / Landstraße": http://www.cityairporttrain.com/Infos/Tarifubersicht-(1).aspx € 11.- one-way
- by bus to e.g. "Morzinplatz / Schwedenplatz" in the City Center or other locations, e.g. Westbahnhof: http://www.postbus.at/en/Airportbus/Vienna_AirportLines/index.jsp € 8.- one-way
- by S-Bahn (commuter train) to "Wien-Mitte / Landstraße": http://www.viennaairport.com/jart/prj3/va/main.jart?rel=en&content-id=1260752528082&reserve-mode=active € 4,20.- one-way, includ. cont. trip in Vienna to your final destination

I think taxi- and transfer-cars options were already discussed earlier, all around € 30.- to 35.- for max. 4 passengers ...

And al least Friday and Saturday nights, the underground lines go 24h a day, during the other nights there are over 20 nightbus lines filling the gap ...

Can the 48 hour ticket be bought at the airport along with a single ticket to the city limits?

There is a combined ticket of the CAT Express airport train and the 48h ticket for the local traffic in Vienna for € 29.-, which is the same as the price if you buy both tickets seperatly, it just makes it a bit easier because you can pre-order it online and print it out yourself on one paper: https://www.cityairporttrain.com/SpecialPages/Booking-Process.aspx?iswl=1&numadults=1&numchildren=0

And yes, there are also normal ticket vending machines at the airport on the train platforms, and there used to be a counter from the Vienna Tourist board at the arrival hall / luggage belt area as well that sold tickets, should still be there I think ...

And a yearly ticket that covers all modes of transport in Vienna works out at €1 a day....

It is a refreshing change how foreign transport networks operate, and how drivers across them live with competition, 24 hour weekends, and no such thing as a "strike".

Compared to here and it's a backward world. I've had foreigners completely puzzled by having to pay separate tickets for different networks, why buses and trains don't operate at night, how it's difficult to get to an airport for an early flight, and why Dublin has no metro system.

At least they stay away at Christmas, when everything shutsdown completely. Over in Europe, trains don't have a two day siesta, hotels are open, and the main airports remain operational. Normal life goes on. If you're in England, you can fly out of Heathrow on December 25 if you have to. If you need to fly out of Dublin hehe, like it or not you're staying put until the next day. Angry

Though it has to be said thats "thanks to" strong unions, public transport also didn´t run on the 1st of May until lunchtime until a few years ago, and the City government is currently in a battle with the bus-drivers union who are refusing to drive their busses through the crowds in a new pedestrian area on Saturdays ...
Ah, and for those of you arriving in Vienna on Sunday: Stock up with everything you need at the airport or on the trainstation (open supermarkets there, look for BILLA, SPAR or MERKUR), the normal supermarkets and shops in Vienna (main sightseeing areas excepted) are fully closed on Sundays ... (most shops close 18:00 on Saturday and reopen around 08:00 on Monday)
