I read an article suggesting that O'Neill should call up Lee O'Connor or Conor Masterson to the upcoming squad. Considering neither of those players have got within an ars*s roar of playing first team football, I think someone like Dunne would be far more worthy of a call-up if O'Neill were to pull a left-field move and select a young defender...

Why not . Even just to train with the squad . Hes very young for a centre half so the fact hes doing so well at that level already suggests a bright future for the lad.

I wouldn't be against calling up a few young lads for experience. Corey Whelan may be worth a consideration if we're going to be going down that route. In the Yeovil team, and playing tonight in the FA Trophy semi against Shrewsbury. Given our goalkeeping problems, perhaps O'Hara, too, who made the United squad for the Chelsea match recently.

Much like O'Connor and Masterson, I'd rather call-up Lawlor or O'Malley (who've played a fair amount of senior football) than O'Hara. I can appreciate the sentiment though and wouldn't mind seeing a few surprise call-ups. There is a pertinent different between a "surprise" and a "ridiculous" call-up though; I think selecting guys who have never played senior football at any level would be verging on the ridiculous.

Young players should only receive invitations to train with the team if they are playing first team football. Reserve/U-23 football doesnt warrant a call up, even if they are at clubs like Liverpool or United.

Keiren Westwood (33) is injured and may need an operation. Doyle is playing in League 1 and turns 33 in June. Rob Elliot (32 next month) has had a lot of injury problems in the past 18 months and is currently out the picture at Newcastle. Rogers is stuck on the bench at Aberdeen. Lawlor's lost his place at League 1 Doncaster. Randolph (31 in May) has had to drop a division to find first team football after a difficult time at West Ham last season - though he's obviously done well for us overall.

I don't understand the bafflement. You don't think we have a few concerns in this department?

Exactly. Calling up Masterson or O'Hara or O'Connor would be ridiculous at this point. Terry Dixon says hello.

I'm more worried about the midfield and forward line for this campaign and next...If no one looks like they are coming through by 2020 I'll be mightily worried though

Did the young striker at Southampton make it on to any match days squads again?
Any further word of Nigeria coming in for him?

Caoimhin Fowler was released by Vitesse at the end of last season and is now back in Australia playing in the 2nd division. Niklas Baylor was also released by Wolfsburg.

You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995"
