Topic: Under 21's matches Posted: 24 Mar 2009 at 5:15pm |
They play Spain in a friendly this Friday live on Sky.
They then begin their campaign next tuesday at home against Turkey which should also be live on Sky.
Should be 2 very decent games and hopefully they have the Turkey game on the box in a bar in Bari the night before the game. Nothing better than stuffing those Turks....no pun intended.

Cheers lads, though it might be in Dublin and was considering going along.
Got a hectic weekend so won't be able to make Waterford!

Tomorrow night is a sell out. Republic of Ireland Under-21 team manager Don Givens was today
confident his team could maintain the form they showed in last month’s
match against Germany when they host Spain on Friday night in another
friendly at the Waterford RSC (7.45pm).
All tickets for the game have been sold-out but the match will be televised live on Sky Sports.
This Ireland team showed last month they are capable of competing with
top nations when they drew 1-1 against a Germany side which had already
qualified for this summer’s Under-21 European Championship finals.
The fact that most of the German players were at least a year older
than their Irish opponents provided further evidence to Givens that the
squad is progressing.
“We start our 2011 UEFA Championship qualifying campaign next Tuesday
with a match against the top seeds, Turkey, at Turner’s Cross so it
will important to get a good performance against Spain first,” Givens
said today.
“This group of lads showed they are determined and disciplined against
Germany, aspects which are important when they step up to this level.
“I think this Under-21 squad is the one I’ve managed where most lads
are playing competitive football. That makes a huge difference in terms
of coping with the pace of International football.
“Reserve team fixtures can be like testimonial matches sometimes and
it’s vital that the players experience competitive football with clubs,
even if it means going on loan.”
Givens must operate without his central-defensive partnership from last
month’s game, as Michael Spillane and Shane Lowry are both ruled out
with injuries. A third component of his back-four, Michael Liddle, will
also miss the match due to a knock.
“It’s unfortunate for the lads who are injured but it gives others
the opportunity of coming in and impressing,” noted the manager.
“Eddie Nolan, who was born here in Waterford, is back in the squad and
will captain the team while Jay O’Shea and Seamus Coleman - both of
whom weren’t considered for the Germany game because they were out of
season - come into the side.”
Republic of Ireland U21 team v Spain:
Shane Redmond (Eastwood Town)
Seamus Coleman (Everton)
Eddie Nolan (Preston North End) - captain
Darren Dennehy (Hereford United)
Brendan Moloney (Notts Forest)
Stephen Gleeson (MK Dons)
Owen Garvan (Ipswich Town)
David Meyler (Sunderland)
Alan Judge (Plymouth Argyle)
Jay O’Shea (Galway United)
Cillian Sheridan (Motherwell)

Will be watching out for David Meyler. He was close to being on the bench for Sunderlands last premiership game against Man City.
