the truth of the matter is that he'd be fighting fires for the next 12 months should he survive. its two years to the next election...plenty of time for his enemies to sharpen the knives for another go at him next year.

He’ll win the vote but the black spot has been put on him. No leader survives long after one of these, they become lame ducks and find it harder to govern. Happy days for Labour.

somebody placed a £100k bet this evening on the lib dems winning one of tomorrow's two by-elections at 2/5.

no doubt the tories will lose both seats, the question is how bad will the losses be.

Even with those results I'm not sure it will be that huge because both were expected.
Great results - Causes more damage to Boris and the Tories and he will still try and front it out giving us more time of him causing more damage to the Tories.

While I expected the loss in Devon the media weren't so sure. He is now the lamest of lame ducks and they'll soon go on their summer holidays so he'll limp on for a few more months. They'll do even more damage before this government falls, just look at the HRA bill this week.

The Lib Dems were something like 1/5 to win the seat.

Obviously things like the HRA bill are terrible but hopefully more sustained damage will mean the more chance of the Tories losing the next election and give Labour a chance to remove some of the awful things done.

That's exactly what you'd expect the Guardian to say.
I think the Tories would be more worried after this is the Guardian wanted him to stay!

I’ve always held a belief that Tories/right wingers/conservatives etc will turn on their leader once the are set to lose hard and soft power. Faced with a GE in 2019 that’s why they abandoned May, installed a new leader, with a limited slogan about the hot button issue of the day, Brexit. Since then it’s been disaster after disaster, with the outcome being the massive loss of support in the polls, disastrous electoral results and a confidence motion that had anything but a decisive outcome.

Once the Cabinet members start to grow a set and submit resignations the writing is surely on the wall. Dowden is a nonentity, a vacuous sycophant amid the most talentless front bench in living memory. He will be remembered mainly if at all for his duplicitous stoking of populist culture wars but you’d expect some sort of choreography in these matters with some of the bigger beasts with leadership ambitions following suit in due course. Bojo wants to limp on until the Party Conference in October in the hope that something will turn up and he can rally the troops but he’s got the stench of a loser on him now and that’s the one thing the Tories can’t abide in a leader. Expect a rule change soon to allow another leadership challenge. The train has left the station.

the sooner they get rid of him the sooner they can start repairing the damage ahead of the general election in 2024. the longer he hangs on the worse it'll be for the tories in 2 years time.

of course the impending recession could scupper any hope of repairing the damage.
