   As recently as four weeks ago, when there was a media furore of what Labour's definition of anti-semitism was, the Tories, who were piling on, still made no mention of anti-semitism in their code of conduct. There is an incredible degree of hypocrisy here.

The Daily Mail openly supported the Nazis.

Ultimately this comes back to the concerted push by the pro-Israel lobby - which most definitely exists - to tar all criticism of Israel as anti-semitic.

There will naturally be a lot more criticism of Israel within the Labour party because it's a core tenet of left-wing values to oppose things like illegal occupation and ethnic cleansing, whereas within other parts of society, notably within the Tory party, the concept of opposition to empire, racism and ethnic cleansing has been a much more dubious thing.

There are obvious historical parallels to be drawn from Israel's conduct. For example, Gaza and the Jewish ghettoes of Poland in World War II. Apartheid is another obvious one.

These comparisons can often be fraught with problems and have to be phrased carefully.

But the bona fides of the person making the criticism and the bona fides of the criticism itself are the important thing.
