Irish Development Squad announced for Mayo Cup
THE Republic of Ireland U16 Development Squad has been announced for the Mayo International Cup in Castlebar this weekend.
FacebookTwitterEmailPrintMore
19th Aug 2015
U16s Head Coach Tom O'Connor will lead the Irish squad into the tournament which includes fixtures against Northern Ireland, Millwall, Chesterfield and the FAI Castlebar squad.

"We are looking forward to playing a variety of different styles and it'll help consolidate the team before the start of the new season," said O'Connor.

"We're looking forward to playing Northern Ireland who will be similar to ourselves. They're training three days a week and we expect them to be very well organised.

"Having said that, the Northern Ireland fixture will just be a game in the series of games. The other teams will all represent their own challenge for the players."

Although the Mayo International Cup is a development opportunity for the Irish side, O'Connor fills there are many elements required of the players this week which they can learn from as they progress on the international ladder.

"This tournament replicates something similar to what they'll experience at international level. They will be involved in the different things that are elements of being in an international squad, such as travelling, staying in hotels, eating the right things, resting, attending team meetings and all the other experiences that goes with representing your country," he added.

"We feel that the four games they'll play over the three days will be beneficial for them. It's all about the players at this level.

"A number of the players involved have progressed from the Emerging Talent Programme to the SSE Airtricity U17 National League so I would imagine that there will be clubs watching these players this week that will hope to give them the opportunity to step up to that level in the future."

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND DEVELOPMENT SQUAD:

Patryk Osinski (Mallow)

Kevin Healy (Belvedere FC)

Cian Lee (Belvedere FC)

Jordan Doherty (Home Farm)

Gavin Kilkenny (St Kevin's Boys)

Luke Nolan (St Patrick's Athletic)

Charlie Barry (St Francis)

Thomas Caffrey (St Francis)

Cian Hughes (St Francis)

Aaron Bolger (St Joseph's Boys)

Tom Murphy (St Joseph's Boys)

Dominic Peppard (St Joseph's Boys)

Aaron Connolly (Mervue Utd)

Mark Kelly (St Patrick's Athletic)

Yassine En-Neyah (Bohemians)

Cian Murphy (Cork City)

Darryl Walsh (Waterford United)

Lee O'Connor (Villa FC, Waterford)

Best of luck to all players involved.

Just looking at the squad all the usual Elite Schoolboys clubs have players involved as per norm so much for the pathway to LOI U17. O Connor mentions in this piece about the LOI clubs having a chance to see these player for the coming year.
I know there is a few LOI clubs represented here within the the squad but there is a lot more players of this age group that have followed the advice they received from the Regional Centres of Excellence that the pathway as per FAI / Ruud Dokter etc was to join the new LOI U17 so how come there is so few from the LOI 17 league in the squad. And the top DDSL clubs get their players in as usual.
Same o=O Same o I have been told numerous times that POLITICS are at play when these squads are selected.

I don't get what your point is?
The 2 Pats players are u16s,playing in the LOIu17s
The "elite" clubs players, are playing ddsl u16
What am I missing here!?
Maybe the majority of players in u17 LOI are over age for u16 football

Has the u17 league started yet?

EDIT - My bad. It started a week or ten days ago. How inept that the squad isn't full of players from it

So the Pathway laid out by Dokter an Co has hit a brick Wall already. By the way the league started 2 weeks ago but trials and training is being going on since early June for this 17's league so its not a overnight thing clubs have been entered their teams into this since last year.

Looking at the list of players thirteen out of the team of eighteen have played or are playing with the top clubs in Dublin seems a bit loaded doesn't it what about the other players at this age group around the rest of the Country. Don't forger there is 11 Regional ETP centres spread across the whole of the 26 counties its amasing how the vast majority of the team is confined to Dublin based players. Have the FAI taken back the cars from their reps so they can only travel by Dublin Bus now?  Unhappy

The majority of players playing at U17 level are born in 1999, with the exception of a teams who will play with 1998 for the interim season. I watched Bray v Cabo on Tuesday night and Cabo fielded an almost entire team of players born in 1998.

Players born in 2000 (Making them eligible for this squad), haven't moved into LOI set-ups yet, bar the exceptional few.

Agree with Yellow Belly could have brought in players from other regions. Also does anyone know the make up of the FAI Castlebar squad?

Heard that players would get more games with the likes of Belvo than joining a team in the under 17 league - Is that true ?

A brick wall!!!!

Are you an idiot?

Typical nonsense from keyboard warriors methinks....

Teams have played two games in the shortened season. Give the fecking competition a chance before you prematurely write it off.

Anyway these FAI 'development squads' are made up from the ETP which the players have been in for the past few years.
