Need some insights on TY
I’ve a 15 year old doing Junior this year and wants to do TY I never did it and used the year to repeat the leaving to get the points I needed So is it a waste of a year or having searched previous posts The Huntacha - Says not doing it is his biggest regret. Stats from the DOE say that students who do TY on average score 46 points higher and have a lower college dropout rate |

I did TY and subsequently lost interest as it was the biggest waste of time and left school, returned for 5th year but had started work at that stage so didn't stick with it, so no leaving cert for me!
Thank christ ya can study as a mature student without your LC is all I can say

Ended up repeating the LC because I could not settle back into proper studying after a doss year.

It's a tough one, really.
Did it myself and to be fair it was the ultimate doss year, which was great at the time obviously but it made settling back into 5th year a bit tougher then I'd say it would be if you went straight from the Junior Cert environment where you're used to studying and a routine etc.
I suppose it just depends on the individual really. What I would say is that personally I'm glad I did it because otherwise I would have been 17 for my entire first year of college which would have been incredibly bent in terms of the social aspect - i.e constantly getting drained for I.D on nights out.
I'd also find out how many of his current year are planning on doing it - if it was like my school where 95% of the year did it then it might be in his best interests to stick with all his current mates, rather then skip ahead into a new year and have all those worries of trying to settle in again to a new class etc whilst also trying to knuckle down for the Leaving Cert.

It depends on how the school runs TY. When I did it there were no tests, hardly any proper classes and most of the time was spent just messing about. Great laugh at the time but I found it hard to get back into the routine of a normal school day when 5th year started. Given the amount of time off we had in TY most of us would have had part time jobs which wouldn't have been given up for the Leaving Cert.
If its run properly with the focus remaining on LC preperation rather than gokarting and being late most fridays with a hangover then like we had then I'd say its definately worthwile.

What will the 15 year old do in TY?
I did it and as far as I can remember it was just a normal year. I spent my whole time in school dossing so it didn't matter to me. It will give him\her another year to think about what they want to do after they finish school etc.. |

I enjoyed it and found that you get to know people a lot better, by going on trips etc. with them. Obviously it's different for everyone, but in my school nearly everyone who I did Junior Cert with went on to do Transition Year and we went on to have one of the best performing Leaving Cert results.
If you're motivated in regards to study you shouldn't have a problem getting back into a routine for the Leaving Cycle. What was your son like in terms of studying for the Junior Cert? I'd imagine that would give you an idea of how he'd get on in terms of having to study after the transition year.

Enjoyed it.
Got an insight into some subjects that wouldnt be covered by the LC curriculum. Coupled with classes fooling the English teacher into letting us watch The Crying Game, From Dust til Dawn and multiple games of football it was tremendous. Plus, work experience. Few bob in pocket and realised i didnt want to be a tiler or a printer

Couldn't agree with the above more, I loved TY, it was a bit of a doss but I wouldn't say we learned nothing, did mini companies and the like, other classes we wouldn't usually do like computers (was 1997), best thing was the trips and you do get to know everyone so much better.

Cheers Lads
School is very good and the TY seems very well put together. Space on TY limited to 70 of about 400-500 pupils Hes not a book worm(by any stretch), but was on board with doing the after school study program since september for his junior Hes into graphics(video editing, is what he wants to do) and Photography which is part of the TY program. |

I think it all depends on the school really, I personally didn't do it but I remember goin into 5th and meeting the lads that did and it certainly benefitted them for the leaving cert. an extra years tuition, more mature etc can only be good.
But again if the school isn't up to scratch I wouldn't waste time |

Ye as I said Huggy it was my biggest regret looking back, I still got a good LC (400 points) but I was nowhere near mature enough to start college at 17. I'd speak to the school about it as I know in my old school it's not as big of a doss as people think, they have exams at the end of it (not sure on what though). Most of the people that I started secondary school with and did TY ended up scoring higher in their LC and also were more clued in to what they wanted to do in College and were less likely to drop out, compared to those of us who went straight to 5th year.
That extra year in school is huge for a students development and can prevent them from making rash decision about the route they want to take after school. So my main bit of advice would be to get some information from the school about it, they'll reassure you that it's not the doss year it used to be.

Done it myself. Done nothing in it. Spent most of my time outside of the classroom than in it. So ended up doing nothing in 5th and 6th year. So IMO skip it. If you don't get what you need repeat the LC.

I would swerve it , if you end up repeating the leaving then you have 7 years of secondary behind you , better off straight into 5th year imo.

If the evidence shows that TY kids do better in the Leaving Cert, I would be tempted to go for it. However, I'd imagine the reason they show that is that more kids from privileged backgrounds in fancy schools do TY and they tend to get better results anyway.... It's a hard one to be sure of and you might want to ask the school their thoughts, assuming he definitely wants to go to college.
However, I think the fact he might be 17 in college is definitely something to consider.... do you really want to put him through that? I was 19 but I had a couple of friends who were 17 (only for the first three months) and it was a pain in the ass for all of us, not just them, whenever we wanted to go out together. In terms of friends, I see what you say about only 70 odd doing TY every year.... I'd talk through that with him. It could cause serious jealousy in his leaving cert year (and other problems, too) if most of his friends are off living the life at college and he is stuck in school, but if he has good friends doing TY as well, I imagine it wouldn't be the biggest concern in the world. Finally, I think the extra year helps in determining what you want to do with yourself. I changed my mind so much between 15 and 18 and I think the longer the CAO decision and the implications it entails can be postponed, the better, and for that reason (and it is a big reason) I would come down on the side of doing TY. I should add they don't have TY in the north, but I can see the benefit of it. Loads of kids in the UK take gap years between finishing exams and starting college, some without even applying to university until after they have finished exams. There is definitely a benefit in taking a bit of time for reflection. I would make sure you talk to his teachers and that he talks to his friends but, ultimately, I think it is probably not a bad idea. If you are unsure, let him decide, and if after consideration he decides differently from you, don't worry about it too much. I can't see that it is conclusively life altering one way or the other, anyway. |
