29/5/23

League 1 Playoff Final

Luca Connell - Barnsley 8

Looks a really good player at 22 years old and got the better of Bannan in midfield. Will feel that he could have won the game, though.

24/5/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 7

Added an extra dose of pace and power up front but sometimes his hold-up play let him down. But he gave City something to think about.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 8

Quite rightly had a red card overturned by Kevin Clancy after a clumsy tackle from behind on Oh. Put in a brilliant, combative shift for the team.

27/5/23

Championship Playoff Final

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Brought the ball out confidently from the back but couldn’t get close enough to Clark to deny him scoring the opener. Made a big block to deny Morris shortly after the opening goal. Did well in his personal battles and won plenty of headers. Excellent throughout, standing up to Luton’s powerful front two.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 6

Booked for a cynical foul on Barrie McKay after clashing heads with Peter Haring and went off early in the second half with an arm injury.

28/5/23

Premier League

Nathan Collins - Wolves 4

Threatened with a first half header. Xhaka bot between him and Semedo for the opener.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Had two gilt-edged chances in the first half but failed to take either of them. Ezri Konsa did a good job of constantly keeping him under pressure.

Mark Travers - Bournemouth 6

Made some good saves and could not do much with the goal.

Caoimhin Kelleher - Liverpool 5

Will feel he should have done better with the second and fourth Southampton goals. Not his best afternoon.

Thanks YTM. I know you said there was a problem with regard to Motherwell ratings, but worth noting that they won yet again at the weekend and kept a clean sheet with both Furlong and Casey starting. Their form has been excellent, easily the 3rd best in the SPL since the two lads joined in January

17/5/23

Championship Playoffs

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6

Made some crucial challenges and headers. Wasn’t helped by some sloppy passing in front.

Luke McNally - Coventry 8

Played on the front foot from the first whistle, first in the tackle and winning his headers well. Helped Norton-Cuffy contain Giles. Read the game brilliantly after the break with timely tackles and interventions to break up Boro’s attacks.

18/5/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Was neat and tidy when he came on and battled well against the giant Sven Botman.

League 1 Playoffs

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6

The star midfielder played well in the first-half when he created half chances for teammates, but he became sloppy in possession in the second half when Posh couldn't get out of their own half. More involved in extra time, but a disappointment overall when Posh needed him most.

19/5/23

League 1 Playoffs

Luca Connell - Barnsley 7

Showed the quality he possesses in his locker to send over a peach of a cross for the opener.

20/5/23

Premier League

Nathan Collins - Wolves 6

Right sided centre half. Recalled to the side for his first start since January. Potentially goal-saving block as Everton threatened from an early corner.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 6

Won some aerial duels early on, but was given a tough task of trying to keep 29 goal striker Shankland quiet.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 5

The stand-in skipper also struggled in an individual battle with opposite winger Oda, and was bailed out by some good defending in the first half after getting caught sleeping on the edge of his own box.

21/5/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 8

When others were trying to delicately stroke the ball home, the 18-year-old just blasted his effort straight through keeper Alex McCarthy to give Brighton the lead. He was also in the right place at the right time to tap home Mitoma's inch-perfect pass. Was withdrawn after the hour mark as the Seagulls lost control of the game for a while.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes – Hibs 5

Poor pass to Youan after coming on. Booked.

I don't think I've ever come across player ratings for Motherwell unfortunately. In Scotland it's usually just the two Glasgow teams, the two Edinburgh teams and Aberdeen usually. Dundee United occasionally.

Nothing re Casey and Furlong at Motherwell YTM? Think Casey was in for a shout as MotM.

12/5/23

League 1 Playoffs

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 9.5

His price tag must be rising with every appearance. He might have been rewarded with the perfect mark, but for one horrible first-half pass which caused a problem for his defenders. His speed off the mark enables him to leave opponents trailing and his passing, while sometimes optimistic, always carries a threat. Opened the scoring here slightly fortuitously and showed great presence of mind as well pinpoint accuracy to create the fourth goal.

13/5/23

League 1 Playoffs

Luca Connell - Barnsley 7

Received a few early jeers from fans of his former club. Steady performance.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 6

Like his defensive partners, was given a tough test by the Hibs front two. Was also on tenderhooks from the get-go after receiving a yellow card with less than a minute on the clock after Jonny Hayes had sold him short with a pass.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 5

Got into some promising positions in wide areas, but was badly let down by his crossing and final ball. Full of running as always but squandered possession on numerous occasions and was unable to link up with Luis Duk Lopes down the left.

14/5/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 7

Came up against the physical Gabriel and while he did not have it all his own way, the teenager got stuck in and gave the Brazilian plenty to think about with his strength and movement.

Championship Playoffs

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Won his early headers and personal battles against Cameron Archer who drifted to his side of the pitch. Brought the ball out well, taking it over the halfway line on occasions. Defended solidly throughout to help keep a vital clean sheet.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

A good shout for man of the match after a dominant display. He didn't give Gyokeres a sniff and won numerous headers as vital times for his side. That Coventry didn't have a shot on target on their turf is a testament to the defence, ushered by Lenihan, as a whole.

1/5/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 6

Typically determined display from Everton’s returning captain who found Calvert-Lewin in the move for the penalty but he allowed Caglar Soyuncu to get between him and Michael Keane to fire Leicester level after the visitors had been bossing proceedings and then went off injured just before the break in what looked like a very concerning incident.

Championship

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6

Physical battle against Hugill. Rotherham didn’t really have a chance other than their goal.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Tried to make things happen but his goals have dried up at the wrong moment. Feels like a one-man attacking band, at times.

4/5/23

John Egan - Sheffield United 5

Got caught early on for a booking, but brought the ball out really well from the back, driving into midfield as Town sat back. Moved into a back four when United chased the game in the second half.

Enda Stevens - Sheffield United 4.5

Replaced the unfortunate Max Lowe after just a few minutes after he went down with an innocuous-looking problem before later making way himself, most likely to avoid the risk of injury after only recently returning to full fitness. Showed some decent moments in his time on the pitch as United dominated possession, always offering an option down the left.

6/5/23

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes – Hibs 7

Dynamic and active in the midfield before being forced off midway through the first half following a head knock.

7/5/23

League 1

Barry Cotter – Barnsley 7

Threatened going forward on his first start for the Reds.

Luca Connell – Barnsley 6

Did not impose himself on the game as much as he is capable of, but delivered a steady display.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 9.5 (Star Man)

Outstanding from a midfielder who deserves to be playing in the Championship next season no matter what happens to Posh. Played in an advanced midfield role and found space well. Very positive with the ball and very accurate most of the time. Hassled opponents to distraction and sealed the win with a goal.

Glenn Whelan - Bristol Rovers 6

Came on for his first appearance in almost two months, taking the armband off Sam Finley. Was replaced himself in stoppage time, taking the applause as he seemingly brought the curtain down on a fine playing career.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7

Town's No.11 scored the final goal of the season, finishing nicely after picking up on Chaplin's rebounded shot. He made a positive contribution after coming on.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Struggled in the first half against the pace of Street but was solid in the second period.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 4

Virtually anonymous for the time he was on the pitch, failed to make an impact.

Dylan Duffy - Lincoln 6

Worked hard and was part of a couple of good passages of play.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 6

Competed well when he came on and helped City keep a clean sheet.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Grabbed his eighth goal of the season with a terrific shot high into the net to give Argyle a 3-1 lead and valuable breathing space in the 61st minute after replacing Danny Mayor at half-time.

Jason Knight - Derby 6.5

Did well on his side of the pitch and got up and down the right flank. Made a couple of crunching tackles too and put his heart into it. Never gave up.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6.5

Made a couple of important challenges to stop Wednesday attacks in the first half and was the best player of the back three.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6

Was nice and crisp in possession, won a couple of tackles and Derby were comfortable until Curtis Davies got into a mess.

David McGoldrick - Derby 6.5

Did his very best to break down the Wednesday defence and was denied by two brilliant saves by Cameron Dawson. Couldn't fault his effort as he was the only player to pack any threat.

James Collins - Derby 5

Had one header that he put back across goal.

8/5/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6 (Star Man)

So unlucky not to score when his excellent strike was tipped onto the bar by Jordan Pickford. It was great to see him back and he could be the real difference maker if Brighton are to achieve a European place this season.

Championship

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Provided the best entertainment of the first half when his attempted pass forward caught ref David Webb flush between the legs, leading to Webb blowing up for half-time early while he got his breath back. Played his part in shackling Khadra when needed and also dealt well with the aerial threat of Jutkiewicz and then Deeney when he came on.

Enda Stevens - Sheffield United 6.5

Back in the side down the left with Lowe joining all United's other left-backs on the treatment table and was inches away from finishing off a move he started with a lovely ball to McAtee, as his left-foot volley dropped not very wide at all of Birmingham's goal. Defensively solid and always available going the other way too before he made way later on to give Buyabu his senior Blades debut.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

As ever, kept the Clarets ticking over in the middle of the park and reacted quickly to loose ball situations.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6 (Star Man)

Had a right old ding-dong with Barnes for most of the afternoon and did really well. Set up Kaba with a great header, but the striker spurned the chance. Can come out of this one with his head held high.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Gave the ball away far too many times without creating much.

Shane Long - Reading 3

Anonymous. Failed to make an impression on the game and just couldn’t get the ball to stick.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

A timely return, and like he'd never been away, slotting into the heart of the defence alongside Jones, and never looked in too much danger.

Harry Vaughan - Hull 7

Another encouraging display early on, where he looks completely at home. Another really promising display from the 19-year-old.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Complemented McNair well throughout, making sure when needed he was there with some big blocks and headers.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Made a really positive start, winning his headers and personal battles as the young Burnley loan man impressed with another consistent level of performance.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Produced a moment of quality when it mattered to pick out Brereton Diaz at the back-post. Hadn't enjoyed the best game up until that point.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 5

Another expected to fund the rebuild, but without having had an especially impressive season himself. Has shone at times, but the Blackpool defeat was another mixed bag from a man still learning his trade.

Looks far more comfortable with a more experienced presence alongside him, as has been displayed on more than one occasion when partnered by Jacob Sorensen.

Adam Idah - Norwich 5

Lacked quality on the ball, despite his endeavour. Two failed balls through for Pukki, and one shot that dragged well wide with strange technique.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

An assured performance, starting the game at left-back before shifting over to the right following Connolly’s knock.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 7

Guilty of a couple of lapses in concentration but looked a real threat offensively. Denied by the keeper on a couple of occasions.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Made way after the opening goal. Operated in behind the front two and was busy in that No.10 role.

Tom Cannon - Preston 5

A couple of moments in the first half but a quiet afternoon on the whole. Left isolated in the second half.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

Also decent enough. Went close with a second-half header.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

Not an awful lot to do in the first half but made a good stop with his legs to deny Paal's dangerous cross. Commanding of his area in the second half when under pressure. Also good with his distribution.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 8

Right place at the right time to tap home Pring's cross to give City the lead. Chased down a lost cause to win a corner that led to their second. Bags of energy getting back and forth. The only criticism was he could have been more decisive with his deliveries on occasion.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 8

Put his side in trouble in the build-up to West Brom's opener but impressed after that. Made his fair share of defensive contributions though and really showed his worth in the second half. Teed up Olivier Ntcham and won the free-kick for Joel Piroe's dramatic winner.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

The kind of situation which Albion heavily required Molumby to be on his A-game, and he was. Leading the press, he won the ball high and wrestled back possession a number of times, showing energy in droves.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Energetic as expected in a wide right role, chipping in with a couple of useful crosses and getting onto the end of a couple of others.

23/4/23

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 10 (Star Man)

By far and away the Irishman's best game in an Aberdeen jersey. Was very comfortable in possession and his ability to read situations allowed him to pounce on that ball that lead to his sensational goal. Even if he didn't mean it, the defender deserves all the praise for a fantastic all round performance.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 8

Celebrated his contract extension with a typical Jonny Hayes showing. Full of running, endeavour and played his part in the lead up to Miovski's goal. Boss Robson admits it was a "no brainer" to hand the 35-year old a new contract, and you can see why.

24/4/23

Championship

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Brilliant and commanding throughout in a great battle with Carlton Morris. So unfortunate in the manner possession was turned over for what proved to be the attack leading to the penalty. But otherwise superb as he orchestrated an unfamiliar back four on top of his own performance.

25/4/23

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Pressed very intelligently alongside Dolan in attack. Had a few low-key efforts on goal which Muric mopped up.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Look good on the ball when given the chance to do so. Booked early in the second half for bringing down Ben Brereton Diaz.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Consistent as per usual from O’Connor, and was aggressive in his defending to win the ball a couple of times.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 5

Worked hard and came very close to scoring before his withdrawal. Showed a couple of poor touches in the second half though.

Dylan Duffy - Lincoln 6

Had a bright first half, drilled a shot wide from 20 yards which was comfortably City’s best effort of the opening period. Surprised that he was replaced at the break.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 6

City’s best player in the second half. Was the Imps’ most likely source of a goal.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 6

Replaced Danny Mayor as one of Argyle's two number 10s from the start of the second half and could have made the score 3-0 when he was set up for a shot by Bali Mumba but sent the ball wide of the near post.

26/4/23

Championship

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Had a golden chance to put United 2-0 up and relax Bramall Lane further when Berge's excellent cross picked him out, but he headed down and wide of the left-hand post.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6

Corberan wanted personality, desire and capability - you know what you'll get from Molumby by way of an attitude and his ability to cope in such environments isn't to be questioned, but he wasn't quite as dynamic as he has been in recent games.

27/4/23

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

Won everything in the air and was strong in the tackle. A solid performance.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 6

Threw himself about nicely, but couldn't quite influence proceedings. Subbed at half-time with a knock.

28/4/23

Championship

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6

Forced out of position on a couple of occasions due to errors elsewhere. Even filled in at centre-half during the final stages of the game.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5

Lost the ball cheaply for Millwall’s first two goals. Tripped for the penalty, which looked generous upon watching back.

29/4/23

Premier League

Nathan Collins - Wolves 3

Collins’ poor clearance handed the ball to Welbeck, who fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box for Brighton's fifth.

Championship

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Had absolutely no chance with Manuel Benson's screamer but made an important save with his legs just minutes after. Denied Twine on the stroke of half-time. Perhaps could have done better with Rodriguez's effort.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Barely put a foot wrong coming on at right-back. Always wanted the ball out on the touchline.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8

Solid and reliable in the middle of the park on the ball, as per usual. Rarely gave the ball away in alert pass and moving display.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 5.5

Played centrally after coming on. Added some energy in the final third.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Won his early headers amid a confident start from the Burnley loan defender who was right on top of his game. Pinged a lovely long diagonal to Hamer to spark a first half attack. Outstanding throughout, getting the better of Jutkiewicz time and time again.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 5.5

Long has been struggling with illness recently but he battled through to play another 90 minutes and was the pick of the defensive bunch. Neither Long or Roberts could handle Gyokeres.

Harry Vaughan - Hull 7

Terrific start to the game, his every touch exciting the crowd. A lovely ball in fashioned the opener, lost his way as the half wore on but responded well in the second. Another good showing for the teenager.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

Typically bright down the left-hand side. Worked his socks off and put some decent balls into the box.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 6

An impressive performer in the first half but tailed off badly in the second half and was left chasing shadows for large parts of the second half.

Shane Long - Reading 5

Back in the 11 after his sub appearance last week. Played mainly out wide on the right and worked a real shift with his running and cute play. Got little reward, though, and withdrawn for Azeez.

Tom Cannon - Preston 5

A quiet game up top. Had a chance at the start of the second half but saw it smothered. Didn't look after the ball or use it well enough and cut another frustrated figure in yellow.

Troy Parrott - Preston 5

Looked annoyed with the decision-making from teammates in the first half, with him making runs but not receiving the ball. Had a couple of openings over the game, but couldn't find the finish.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 3

Comfortable save when Jamal Lowe rolled in the only short of the first half. Abysmal goalkeeping to push shot to Adomah for goal.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 4

Rushed forward to win a couple of corners through the first half but set pieces largely came to nothing.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 8

Won vital challenges and was as wholehearted as ever.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

Was a classy presence in the heart of midfield for West Brom, dictating the tempo of the match with his passing range. Came close to scoring but was denied by a stunning block from Andrew Omobamidele. Kept things under control as the game progressed and went into game management mode after taking the lead. The midfielder was embroiled in some late gamesmanship antics to the amusement of the home faithful.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 6

Dragged out of position and outnumbered for Albion's goal when Thomas-Asante freed the overlapping Townsend. Caught flat-footed in the eighth minute when Thomas-Asante broke free to test Angus Gunn.

Fantastic spreading block to foil Jayson Molumby, who looked set to score from a cut back in the 39th minute. Not a memory to cherish on his 50th senior appearance, and leading the team out.

League 1

Jason Knight - Derby 6.5

Was excellent in the first 25 minutes but the Pompey goal killed Derby's momentum when they were well on top and should have been ahead given their chances. Showed great energy.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

Did okay in defence and was untroubled in the first 25 minutes as Derby dominated the game but couldn't make their pressure count. Was very composed after the break.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 8

Showed a bit of edge that was good to see in a challenge with Joe Morrell and was crisp in possession when he had the ball. Looked to switch play when he could and was excellent.

David McGoldrick - Derby 6

Derby's top scorer did his best, but was denied by Matt Macey on a couple of occasions. Kept plugging away in the second half and saw a shot blocked.

James Collins - Derby 7

Took his goal brilliantly and was a real nuisance when he came on.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

Dug in defensively and unsurprisingly unable to make too many inroads attacking that right flank. One of the success stories of the season and a pivotal figure, with plenty about him.

Warren O'Hora - MK Dons 6

It should have been a day to celebrate for O'Hora as he scored in his first home game since January. But speaking afterwards, admitted Barnsley's comeback goals all came down his side.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 6.5

Phased in and out of the game, but played a key role at the start of the second-half as Dons hit the gas.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6

Didn't get much opportunity.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 5

Aside from one impressive surging run into the opposition penalty area, this was a poor showing from the star midfielder. No lack of effort, but lost possession too easily and ignored a couple of easy-looking through balls in the second-half in favour of more difficult ones.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Took over from Danny Mayor in a straight swap positionally in the 61st minute and played an important part in Argyle controlling the closing stages of the game. Had one decent scoring chance but dragged one shot across the face of goal.

30/4/23

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7 (Star Man)

Had to do quite a bit of defending in the first half and stood up to the task well. Hit one awful pass which almost allowed Huddersfield in, but apart from that, very good.

Interesting report on Sinclair Armstong. He’s very raw but he could have potential

Thank Christ Sheff United are almost certain to get automatic promotion. At 30 and turning 31 in October, it would pain me if John Egan didn't get at least another crack at the Premiership.

22/4/23

FA Cup

John Egan - Sheffield United 7 (Star Man)

United's best player. Superb at the back, reading of the game was excellent and showed his experience in the first half when Alvarez was into the area but he kept his composure and stood up well before clearing.

Championship

Kevin Long - Birmingham 5.5

Long won’t want to watch the Blackpool goal again after his loose pass played Etheridge into trouble. He was skinned a couple of times by the lively Rogers and missed a decent chance in the first half.

Andy Lyons – Blackpool 7

Brilliant energy – he never stops.

CJ Hamilton – Blackpool 7

Ran channels well and could have scored late on to put the gloss on it.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Didn't have a shot to save in the first half but showed his safe pair of hands from crosses in the opening 45 minutes. Little chance in saving the penalty. Looked nervy in the second period when City were put under pressure.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

Managed to dig out a couple of dangerous crosses but to no effect.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Quality as has come to be expected in the middle of the park, but did not have quite the same influence after the break.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6

Replaced Maatsen for the final 15 minutes. Added some energy upfront.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 7

Did well against his former club, particularly in the second half. Always determined.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 7

The timing of his introduction and the impact he had with his power and pace played a massive part in the win. It unsettled Burnley just as they were looking set to push on and get the points.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

It wasn't his man - but he was one of the players to get outjumped from the corner for Josh Laurent's goal. Steady thereafter, though, both defensively and with the ball.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 9 (Star Man)

Showed impeccable composure on more than one occasion to stop some attacks down his flank. Made one or two marauding runs down the wing as well. Was the standout player for the hosts by a country mile.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 7

Let the ball through his legs for Sory Kaba to level but redeemed himself by getting low to palm away the striker’s penalty in the second half.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 7

Provided some moments of quality, not least with the corner that assisted Laurent’s goal. Spent a lot of time stuck near the touchline before Sterling took over duties on the wide right.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Dominant in the air and alert to danger, the Burnley loan man defended well throughout. Made some impressive runs upfield in the second half to spark attacks.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

The Newcastle United loanee was involved heavily in the midfield and was neat and tidy on the ball early on, but the Reading midfield was overrun on plenty of occasions.

Shane Long - Reading 5

Back in the squad and was introduced with Reading chasing the game, but unable to make much of an impact.

Sean McLoughlin – Hull 7

Got away with an undercooked header back to Darlow that Pedro then put over the bar, but generally solid, especially second half. Too ambitious with some of his balls forward at times, squandering possession unnecessarily.

Harry Vaughan – Hull 7

Made his home debut for the club, starting on the left wing. Touch let him down a couple of times, but played a part in several promising moves, including the one that drew the foul on Slater inside the box. Made a nuisance of himself off the ball.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 4

Hesitant throughout. Typified by winning a header to halt a Swansea counter and then running the ball out of play under no pressure as he struggled to control it.

Locked onto Latibeaudiere too late inside the Norwich box to prevent a glancing header past Angus Gunn from 10 yards. Bounced off Ntcham for the third, when he burst between the Norwich captain and the right back.

Adam Idah - Norwich 4

Laid off for Liam Gibbs to try and pick out Sargent. Was in the vicinity, but not able to prevent Grimes threading a ball for the overlapping Manning in the build up to Swansea's second goal.

Offered no goal threat before McCallum's dismissal. None of the punch of his second half cameo at QPR, capped by a first goal under Wagner. Was the one to make way in the aftermath of Norwich going down to 10.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 9 (Star Man)

Dear owners. Give this man a new contract. Yours sincerely, everyone connected to Swansea City. Two assists in the opening half and went agonisingly close to netting himself in what was yet another superb display.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Never gave the Rovers back line a moment of peace and had moments. Was just waiting for that golden opening, which never came.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Had half-chances in and around the box but a Rovers man always seemed to be there to get a foot in. Saw an early effort trickle just wide. A frustrating afternoon for him probably.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 8

Doesn’t like his non-stop workrate being mentioned, seeing that as a given for all players, but it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. Had one goal ruled out for handball but took his second chance like a true striker, a role he could well have to fulfil moving forward.

League 1

Jason Knight - Derby 6.5

Managed to get forward on a few occasions when the space presented itself and defended his side of the pitch pretty well against a canny operator in Mustapha Carayol.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6.5

Couple of passes went astray and to hold his hands up for one after he gave it away in midfield by trying to be too clever in the first half. Defended well mind and produced a big challenge at the end.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 8 (Star Man)

The former Aston Villa man was perhaps Derby's best player. Produced some neat passes in tight areas and his set-pieces were on point. His best game for a while and was bang at it.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8

Showed the expected moments of class and finally scored from the penalty spot. Where would they be without him? Mr Dependable and could have left this game with a hat-trick.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 5.5

Posh couldn't get their best player on the ball in the first-half and when he did get it he usually passed it away. More involved after the break when deployed in a deeper position and whistled one fierce shot just wide.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 6

Was a 79th minute substitute for Danny Mayor, with Argyle at that stage in control at 3-1 up. Azaz has not had the same spark about him since he returned from a broken ankle but a player of his ability is always capable of a moment of magic, and that could be important for the Pilgrims in their final three games.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 6

Always looking to drive forward and such an influential presence. Made little inroads in an attacking sense, but always reliable in defensive situations.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 6

Didn’t reach he heights of his derby performance against Hearts, but he wasn’t the only one. Kept working to the end.

23/4/23

Championship

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 8 (Star Man)

Got his feet in a muddle in the first minute in an early opening. Might've had a penalty in the first half. Runs, and runs, and runs. Got Albion into dangerous areas with his tireless running and driving dribbles.

18/4/23

Championship

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 5

Performed okay in the main but he ought to have done better for West Brom’s second, which put the game to bed.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

Pace caused problems down the left flank and his end product was better. Quieter in the second-half though.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

Last week’s brace scorer Molumby strutted his stuff and got about the Seasiders’ midfield to great effect as they struggled to get into the final third to help their attackers.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Energetic and reliable in possession in the middle of the park. A quality showing from the midfielder, as has come to be expected.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 5.5

Did not make much impact owing to time constraints.

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Superb display at the back. Won almost everything that came his way, reading of the game was good with a couple of timely interceptions and also produced a lovely pass down the line to release Ndiaye.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

A little nervy moment in the first half but a strong performance on the back of the Watford defeat. Commanded his area well although kicks to Cornick were hit and miss. Not much he could have done with the winner.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Was heavily involved on the right side, getting crosses into the area but with no one on the end of them.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 4

Barely had anything to do but pick ball out of net and seemed to lose confidence thereafter, clutching at thin air for cross then refusing to come for ball.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

A couple of well-placed set pieces generated chances.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 5

His mistake was costly for the opening goal - dived in and allowed Khadra to beat him easily. Showed intent and got forward after the break.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 8

Long is surely playing his way towards a new Blues contract. That is four clean sheets in six matches and the Irishman is right at the heart of it in defence.

League 1

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 7

Revelled in his more advanced midfield role in the first-half when he passed the ball crisply. A fine assist on the crucial opening goal. Found it harder to get on the ball after the break and Posh suffered as a result.

Jason Knight - Derby 8

Played at right wing-back and had the lively Jake Caprice to deal with. Should have given Derby the lead early on, but was denied by a superb save. Always up for the fight and put in some shift.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 7

Did well in a couple of one v one situations when he came out on top by just biding his time. Didn't take many risks and adopted a safety-first approach. Solid.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6.5

Played in a deeper role which enabled him to get on the ball more but got more advanced after the break and swung some lovely crosses in.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8

On a night when chances were few and far between, Derby needed some magic and the striker provided it with one of the best goals of the season and then another lethal finish.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Solid for the most part but nearly gift wrapped an opener for Herbie Kane.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 4

Just didn’t seem on it today. Disappointing considering recent performances, but too often he got the ball out to Boyes all wrong.

Dylan Duffy - Lincoln 7

An impressive display from the Irishman on his first start. Whipped in some delicious crosses and showed good ability on the ball.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 5

Defended solidly when he came on.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 5

Too shot-shy, and played passes into dangerous areas, but areas which didn't have a white shirt in them.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6

Got on the ball a lot and tried to play forwards but had little to aim at.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 6

How the Pilgrims were not awarded a penalty by referee Anthony Backhouse for a clear foul on Azaz by Chey Dunkley just moments before the hosts opened the scoring is a mystery.

19/4/23

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Played as a left-sided number eight rather than his usual number 10 role to add solidity in midfield. Didn't see loads of the ball but offers plenty to the side defensively when that's the case.

Luke McNally - Coventry 6.5

Helped keep a close eye on Brereton Diaz and made a crucial block to deny Rankin-Costello finding the target in a first half when chances were few and far between for both sides. Got back to defend brilliantly and dispossess Gallagher on the counter attack as City pushed for an equaliser.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

Had a quiet first half, with Norwich carrying little threat, but was booked on 40 minutes for dissent. Helped to hold off an increasingly anxious late surge by the Canaries.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 5

An awkward showing from a man entrusted to carry the City defensive unit in Grant Hanley and Ben Gibson's absence.

Ball progression not as aggressive or urgent as it could have been, and must take his share of the responsibility for Lyndon Dykes' opener.

Hamstrung by a booking for most of the game after a sloppy concession to Kenneth Paal forced him to foul the Rs winger.

Adam Idah - Norwich 7

Made many supporters eat their words less than a minute after his introduction. An unmissable chance for the equaliser, but his instincts placed him where he was for the tap-in.

Followed that goal up with some impressive dynamism that threatened the QPR defenders and dragged City up the pitch. Lacked the quality to go with his power at times but certainly improved the team.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 8

The Irishman wreaked havoc from a more advanced position and did ever so well in the build-up to Allen's goal. Put in a fine free-kick for Darling's headed effort at the end of the opening half too.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Improved in the second half and got his goal. As poor as Preston were, he kept hunting for chances and buzzing around.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7 (Star Man)

Some nice touches off the bench and took his goal exceptionally well.

Robbie Brady - Preston 5

Played out on the right and his cross led to Cannon's goal. Asked some questions in the final third but his square pass led to Swansea killing the game late on.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 8

It's a tough forward line to deal with at Vicarage Road and, fair play, he stood up to the task well. Made a number of crucial interceptions, especially in the second half. Good to put that Sheffield United blip behind him.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 8

That tussle between him and Ismaila Sarr was fascinating, but O'Dowda can hold his head up high for his part in the battle. Started to free-up his legs as City gained confidence, which was great to see.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 7

Steady away at the back but needed to move the ball out quicker in the first-half. Comfortable when they did in the second-half.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

Brilliant in the first period. Got too tight to Archer for the second goal and from there it all went a bit south.

Harry Vaughan - Hull 8 (Star Man)

Started with confidence, keen to get on the ball and move it. Had a growing influence, some of his play going forward was superb. The highlight, though, winning a clever foul on the edge of his own box, drawing applause from his manager. Booked just before coming off in the second, but a terrific first half showing.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Largely overrun in the midfield and needed to impose himself more. Could have been stronger in his 50-50 challenges as well.

21/4/23

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6

Managed to wind up the home fans from the very first minute with his time-keeping for goal kicks. Needed to put the ball in a different place for the Arsenal equaliser, shoving it into the middle of the box where Saka was waiting.

Some good reviews in there, notably Cullen and Molumby, but Knight and Hendrick getting middling ratings.
Manning getting such high praise yet not in our squads is an odd one alright.

Hendrick has been getting constant poor ratings and reviews for weeks now. He is playing regularly  but not well, on current form his place in the Irelnd squad could be in doubt

Great work as always YTM, fair play.

Thanks for this! A few interesting trends over the last few weeks. McNally, Lenihan & McLoughlin seem to be doing very well and give us plenty of depth at CB. On the other hand Cashin’s form seems to have fallen off a cliff. Knight hasn’t exactly ripped it up at L1 level either unfortunately.

14/4/23

Championship

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 7

Composed throughout whenever Boro needed him to be to ensure the ball spent most of the game in the opposition's half. Big first half block when only 1-0 up too.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 3

A very rough night indeed for the Irishman, after impressing in back-to- back clean sheets against Blackburn Rovers and Rotherham United. Out of position for almost every goal, absent against the pace and directness of Cameron Archer, and lacking the cool-headed leadership to prevent things falling apart. An evening to forget in a hurry.

Adam Idah - Norwich 6

More effective than the man he replaced in tough circumstances. He won't be judged on this performance, but with plenty of the recent discussion being around him, all eyes are on the Irishman.

15/4/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 8

So unlucky not to score on two occasions and his movement was causing Badiashile all sort of problems before he suffered his injury setback.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 3

Had very little to do in the first half as Palace rarely gave him anything to deal with. Palmed Ayew's cross straight into the path of Eze for the opener early in the second half.

Championship

John Egan - Sheffield United 7.5

A typical Egan performance in many ways that started in the centre of defence, ended on the right of the back three and never saw the Ireland man look anything but comfortable against a Cardiff side who looked lively at times, both on the deck and in the air.

Ciaran Clark - Sheffield United 7

Made his first appearance since QPR off the bench, slotting into the centre of the back three, and got a goal from close range after the ball bounced off Berge.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 3

Actually looked quite good early on. Made some decent interventions in and around the box, but just fell apart after the first goal. Should have stood up to James McAtee far more effectively than he did. Was at fault for the third too with an absolute howler. An uncharacteristically poor performance.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 3

Got booked early on and did very little else.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

Fairly reserved going forwards but defended resolutely. Finished at left back following Husband’s head injury.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

Did some good Gary Madine-esque holding of the ball in the corner during the final stages to waste some time.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 6

Plenty of energy on the right flank but, not for the first time, lacked quality in possession. Vital sliding challenge to deny Potts as he shaped to shoot in the second half.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Deliveries into the box didn’t amount to much but he still tried to make things happen up and down the line, often slotting in Hughes to create some chances on the overlap. Was brought off in the second half though and Fernandez made a bit more of an impact.

Troy Parrott - Preston 5

Some decent touches on occasion but the end product just wasn’t there for the Tottenham loanee. Got more and more frustrated before being brought off as part of the second half quadruple change.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Fed off scraps for some of the game but tried as best as he could against strong defenders in Cooper and Hutchinson. Ghosted in for a chance in the first half after Long denied Onomah but the aforementioned Hutchinson bravely denied him.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Given an unenviable – arguably unfair – task of playing at right-back. Showed a lack of quality on the ball on occasions he found himself in attacking areas. That was hardly surprising.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Strong and physical in the challenge, the on loan defender put in a no-nonsense display. Made a superb tackle to dispossess Chair on the counter attack as the Rs attempted to get back into the game.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5.5

Had a couple of nice touches but also some poor moments when he inexplicably gave the ball back to Burnley. Did get into some decent goalscoring positions but shooting let him down.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Reliable in possession in the holding role in front of back four. As ever, kept the Clarets ticking and going through the gears in the middle of the park.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 5

Good save to stop Karlan Grant but then beaten by delivery at subsequent corner. Decent stop against Thomas-Asante.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Some useful work in the first half linking play but influence waned as he tired in the second.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7 (Star Man)

When Albion needed it most, Molumby made his return from injury a memorable one. Scored both goals to see off Stoke.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 7

Defended manfully. No nonsense to a point but used his head as well when required to read the game accordingly and shepherd balls out of play.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 8 (Star Man)

Comfortable defensively but didn't have a lot to shout about in attack in the opening half aside from a fine cross that led to Cabango's chance. Brilliant in the second-half though. So good from set-pieces and struck the only goal of the game to win it for the hosts.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 5

Little chance with the opening goal but has to do better for the second having failed to keep out Pedro's strike. In his defence, could have been unsighted by Vyner.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Buzzed around but didn't see much of the ball. Hasn't quite been at his previous levels in the last few matches.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 9 (Star Man)

A timely intervention to deny Lewis Travis in the opening couple of moments. Headed and kicked absolutely everything throughout the game, superb.

League 1

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Was recalled to the team after a recent spell out to play as the 'number 10' in Argyle's 3-4-1-2 formation. The on-loan Aston Villa midfielder came close to breaking the deadlock after a minute of the second half with a curling shot which went narrowly wide.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6.5

Looked good in the first-half when he was the one player to consistently use the ball well. Pushed further forward after the break and wasn't so effective. Missed a great chance to get Posh back into the game.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 4.5

Was incredibly fortunate not to gift a goal to Rovers in the first half after being caught in possession. Didn't need to take the risk. Got booked as well. Needs to sharpen up.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 5

Played a role in the build-up to the first goal as it was his pass that led to Barkhuizen crossing for McGoldrick. Found it very hard to get on the ball which is his strength.

Jason Knight - Derby 5.5

Got into some interesting shoving matches with Sam Finley which he was pulled up for by the referee. Did a lot of chasing and is often the man leading the charge in terms of the press.

James Collins - Derby 5

Ran down the channels, flicked on long balls, got stuck in but needed to be inside the box at times. Can never fault his appetite to get involved but sometimes you just want him to lodge himself in the area.

David McGoldrick - Derby 6.5 (Star Man)

Took his goal superbly when so many players would have thrashed at it. Bought himself time with a touch and then fired past Belshaw. Needs to cut out the tricks when facing his own goal mind.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Had a couple of nervy moments at the start of the game but stepped his game up in the second half.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 6

Solid game from Shodipo, wasn’t as threatening as he has been in the last couple of games.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 9

Produced two of the most beautiful assists of the season, setting up both Sorenson and House. Also had Stone worried with a free-kick from range.

Dylan Duffy - Lincoln 5

Provided a real threat when he came on.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 7

A good showing from the Irishman on his return to the starting line-up. His pass helped Eisa score the opener and generally played a positive role.

Jordan Shipley - Shrewsbury 7

A steady afternoon’s work for the former Coventry man. He was playing at left-back on this occasion, but did really well here stopping crosses and offering a threat going forward.

Killian Phillips - Shrewsbury 8

Considering he has not been in Shropshire long, he plays every game as if it were his last and he provides such a balance to this Shrewsbury team.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 6

Put in a couple of balls from the right, but couldn’t establish a threatening relationship with Dale down that flank. Defensively solid during the match, as ever.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 5

Loose pass led to the attack which provided Shrewsbury’s goal. Otherwise comfortable at the back and in control. Pompey’s issues were undoubtedly further up the pitch.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 7

Like Egan-Riley, picked up an early booking but didn’t let it curtail his game. Was energetic, played on the front foot and started off a lot of Hibs attacks. Made way for Josh Campbell on 70 minutes.
